How do I choose a book? We have a great option for you to find a book: Destiny Discover! What is Destiny Discover? Destiny Discover allows you to look for books in our library by genre, book level, topic, keywords, etc. It can tell you if a book is available or not, and allows you to put a hold on a book if you are logged in.
Click HERE to take yourself to Destiny Discover! You do not need to log in to use Destiny Discover: only for putting a "hold" on a book (which we don't do here), or for adding a book to a favorites list.
We ALSO have a great online resource called Sora. You can click here to check it out. Sora is amazing because you can check the books out and read them right on your Chromebook. No library card needed. Sora has a mix of audio and e-books. Use the information in Sora to determine if the book is the right level for you. It will either say "audience: young adult" or "interest level: 9-12" and that might be a clue that the book is something you should wait until HS or end of 8th grade to read. Your parent or guardian is a great source to ask when you aren't sure if a book is right for you.
The fiction side of the library is sorted by genre making it user friendly to find the style of book you like to read or need to read
We have two types of book levels in our library: middle grades (MG) and young adult (YA)
I often tell students to think of MG as similar to a PG movie, and YA is similar to a PG-13 movie.
YA usually has concepts that a younger student in middle school may not be ready to read (a 6th grader vs an 8th grader). YA may touch on topics such as dating relationships, drug use, violence - but the key to note in these books (different from an adult book about the same topics) is that the protagonist who gets caught up in these difficult situations often learns a valuable life lesson. For example, an 8th grader reading a book about an abusive dating relationship at the high school level or a teenage protagonist confronted with drugs may learn a valuable perspective prior to heading into high school his/herself.
No student is forced to read a book you check out from the library- if you are not comfortable with a book you have checked out, return it and get something else! Books are like food, and we all have different tastes!
The BPS school library collections are continually updated to include materials that supplement and complement current curriculum as well as allow students to pursue outside interests through independent reading.
If a parent/guardian would like to request that their student not check out a specific title(s), they may submit a request in writing to their building Library Media Specialist (egand@bethel.k12.ct.us) . The Library Media Specialist will note this request in the Destiny Library Manager system accordingly.
You can see if the book is stickered YA. But not every book is stickered- we try to sticker them all, but one could be missed. So how else can you check? The BEST way to be sure is:
Simply put the title into Destiny Discover and click on it. It will say YA (young adult) or MG (middle grades). See example below of where to look!
Let's talk about graphic novels! Graphic novels are incredibly popular with our students. Since graphic novels are a relatively new genre, sometimes people may not see them as "real" books. But they are! Here are some articles about graphic novels.

Why do I need to read anyway?
