Congratulations, you have just completed the AP Chemistry Exam! I hope you enjoyed the class and have taken a lot of new knowledge and perhaps developed an interest in pursuing chemistry to a greater extent in the future.
Now that we have finished the exam...we still have approximately 6 weeks left of school. We will have some "down time" although we do still need to do a few projects either individually or as a group. Choose 4 of the following the complete.
So, what does a chemist actually do?? Conduct an in-person interview with a professional chemist or someone pursuing an advanced degree (masters or above) in chemistry or a related-field. Following the interview you will write a 1-2 page essay about what a chemist does in that profession.
Fancy yourself a baker/chef? Bring in something tasty and a 1-page write up explaining the chemistry of cooking that particular item.
Love reading? Try a book related to a science field (some examples, below) Write a 1-2 page summary explaing the book and its relationship to science.
"The Disappearing Spoon" by Sam Kean
"Napoleon's Buttons" by P. Le Couteur & J. Burreson
"The Poisoner's Handbook" by Deborah Blum
"Stuff Matters" by Mark Miodownik
"Radium Girls" by Kate Moore
"The Alchemy of Air" by Thomas Hager
"Uncle Tungsten" by Oliver Sacks
Want to do some science. Find a demonstration online or look at some of our demonstration kits. Practice the demonstration. Make a worksheet to go with the demonstration, record a video or demo to experiment live to the class.
There are series of articles about the science behind everday objects from ice cream to fireworks...Find a few topics that your are interested in and write a 1-page essay on each (2 articles minimum).
Enjoy making puzzles? Make a chemistry escape room on a unit of your choice. Must contain at least 4 locks. You must also submit a sheet with the answers and work.
Create a unit review guide to help future students. Pick a unit (your favorite or maybe the one you found most difficult). The review must include:
Shortened notes with at least 5 practice problems worked out for the unit
A unit review test (15 multiple choice and 1 long FRQ) with the an answer key.
Help inspire the next generation of chemists? For this project you will create a children's picture book to introduce children to the wonders of chemistry. You book must include a separate page for each letter of the alphabet that represents and teaches about a different chemistry topic (A for acids, B for burette). Color and illustrations are required.
This is your time to be creative. Design and create a game of your choosing related to the wonders of chemistry. Choose any format; board game, simulation, video game, etc. You will need to submit:
All required pieces for gameplay
Specialized game pieces must be created (boards/spinners, etc.)
Complete set of rules
Brief video explaining the rules and demonstrating game play
We all noticed those missing AP Daily Videos...Become the AP teacher and create an AP Daily video for a topic of your choosing (maybe one of the missing topics or a topic that you thought the video needed some work). These should be formatted like the AP Daily videos:
Instructional portion that covers the basic foundation information.
3 We Do type practice problems (1 must be an FRQ)
Guided note sheet to use with the video
5 addition practice problems (with solutions) for the students to access their understanding of the video
Create a summer packet of the essential MUST KNOW information for the next generation of AP Chemistry students. This should include readings, notes, prerequisite knowledge, items to be memorized, and practice problems
Use everything that you've learned this year and develop a plan to identify the 12 unknown solutions that were left out in the chemical storage room. Perform the lab and submit your findings.
Create a 2:00 max length video explaining a difficult concept in physics, mathematics, or life sciences. This a a global challenge that could win you a $250,000 scholarship and all details can be found on their website.
