APPLICATION INFO

Some important things to know when you are filling out your application:

Section 1: Project Address and Contact Information

    • Project address must be filled out accurately.

    • Owners information - This is available on the Assessor's Office page on the town's website.

        • If you are the owner and applicant, please check the appropriate box. There is no need to fill out the information twice. Also, at the end of the application you will sign, in both locations, as the applicant and owner.

    • Contractor information -

        • If you are the homeowner and acting as the contractor, please check the appropriate box and include your information. There is no need to fill out the information twice.

Note: If your applying as HOMEOWNER, you must be doing the work. If you hire other tradesmen such as an electrician, plumber, and so forth they will need to pull a trade permit and be licensed. The Building Department does check licenses and anyone working without a CT license, outside of what is permitted by law, will be reported to the Department of Consumer Protection.

Section 2: Project Description

    • If the project is an interior renovation and you are NOT removing or relocating walls, creating a new full bath (shower or tub, sink, and toilet combination), or changing an unfinished/un-insulated space to a living space, you must provide a plan showing what is existing (i.e. bedroom, office, den, kitchen, and/or family room with dimensions, electrical, plumbing).

    • If this is an interior renovation and you ARE removing or relocating walls, creating a new full bath (shower or tub, sink, and toilet combination), or changing an unfinished/un-insulated space to a living space, you must provide a plan showing what is existing and what is being proposed (i.e. bedroom, office, den, kitchen, and/or family room with dimensions, electrical, plumbing). Depending on what is being done we may require you to also contact the Health and/or Zoning department after reviewing the scope of work on your application. We cannot approve your application without Health and Zoning approvals first; if required.

Note: The application allows you to attach your plan/s as well as the manufacture specifications (when applicable).

Section 3: Building Use Group/Code

    • A townhouse is a single dwelling unit with no other dwelling units (owned by others) either above or below you.

    • If you DO NOT see your occupancy listed in the document, please call the Building Department.

    • State law may require drawings from a CT licensed Architect or Engineer based on your occupancy.

    • If your signing on to an existing permit this may not apply to you.

Note: The application allows you to attach your plan/s as well as the manufacture specifications (when applicable).

Section 4: Construction Type

    • If it is a wood structure without steel or masonry walls (not talking about a brick veneer), and is a single family/two family or townhouse, you are typically type V-B construction.

Sections 5-12:

    • The follow sections are specific to what is being installed. Please fill the information out as completely as possible and include attachments.

      • Section 7 - Permit Processing is required and includes estimated cost of the work being done. If you are signing on you will need to know if all of the subcontractor/trades costs were paid by the general contractor; if not you will need to pay a permit fee.

        • For estimated cost, please include labor and materials at fair market value. The building department will be reviewing costs. If you undervalue the cost it will delay your permit and we will bill you for the outstanding balance.

        • Please sign the document on the appropriate line; one line is for the applicant (the one applying for the permit) and the other is for the owner. Owners authorization is required unless you are the owner and the applicant. In that case, you will sign as both. The online software will forward the document to the owner for his signature automatically and if you are both the owner and applicant the software emails you twice. (Sorry do not have a work-around for that)
