Math Instruction

MATHEMATICS

Math instruction at BESD invites students to reason and make sense of the mathematics before them and then moves students forward in a coherent mathematical storyline that includes a deep study of concepts and procedures,  as well as the development of the mathematical practices as described in the Arizona Math Standards.  Teachers use research-informed mathematics teaching practices to engage students in consolidating big math ideas and applying mathematics to solve problems.

MATHEMATICAL PRACTICES

The Arizona Mathematics Standards include two types of standards: Standards for Mathematical Practice (identical for each grade level or course) and mathematical content standards (different at each grade level or course). Together these standards address both “habits of mind” that students should develop to foster mathematical understanding, and what students need to know, understand, and be able to do regarding mathematics content. The mathematical practices for each grade, together with Arizona's Learning Standards for Mathematics, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a rigorous, coherent, useful and logical subject.

The mathematical practices represent a picture of what it looks like for students to understand and do mathematics in the classroom and should be integrated into every mathematics lesson for all students.

Creating a Coherent Mathematical Journey for All Students From the Start

IM Math is a problem-based core curriculum that we use at our schools in grades K-8. It is rooted in content and practice standards to foster learning and achievement for all.  Students learn by doing math, solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language.
