A Time Like This

All the trees were cleared last year

And the lake was filled

With algae blooming

Where the oil spilled

Pull your rain boots on

We’re hopping gasoline ponds

It sizzles just a little when it hits your skin

And it burns

As it’s sinking in

And it’s sinking in

It’s sinking in that you can’t be a kid at a time like this

It’s almost like we’re watching

As the end begins

And it’s sinking in that you can’t be a kid at a time like this

At a time like this

Meet me after school

In the midday sun

The sky is paper thin

So we’d better run

I won’t be surprised if by the time

we get home we’ve turned red

It sizzles just a little when it hits your skin

And it burns

As it’s sinking in

And it’s sinking in

It’s sinking in that you can’t be a kid at a time like this

It’s almost like we’re watching

As the end begins

And it’s sinking in that you can’t be a kid at a time like this

At a time like this

All the trees were cleared last year

And the lake was filled in

They won’t stop building till the world they leave their children’s made of

Tar and dust and oil and steel and sediment

And it’s sinking in
