For any students who do not initially meet the criteria for placement into Advanced Math 1, there will be an opportunity to take a second test on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 after school. This will be the final opportunity to test into Advanced Math 1. Any students who are still interested in pursuing the Advanced Math courses will have an opportunity to test into Advanced Math 2 in late spring of their 9th grade year.

Berkeley High School offers an Advanced Math 1 course for students who have a passion for mathematics and want to invest extra time and effort in their 9th grade math class. Students interested in this course are required to take a placement test. Students who do not pass the first placement test will have one more opportunity to take a placement test after the first 2 weeks of school to potentially move into Advanced Math 1.
On Tuesday, May 13th, 2025, current BHS Math 1 students will have an opportunity to take the Mathematical Reasoning and Communication Assessment (MRCA). The MRCA will be given at BHS. Students who are interested in taking the MRCA should sign up on the Google Form by Friday, May 9th. On Tuesday, May 13th, 2025, students should report to the area outside of H113 at 3:45 PM.
Berkeley High School offers an Advanced Math 2 course for students who have a passion for mathematics and want to invest extra time and effort in their 10th grade math class.
There are four required steps in the process to move from Math 1 to Advanced Math 2:
1) Earn an A in the second semester of Math 1.
2) Demonstrate outstanding mathematical reasoning and communication skills on the Mathematics Communication and Reasoning Assessment in mid-May.
3) Complete and submit all supplemental summer coursework.
4) Demonstrate strong conceptual understanding and skill mastery of the topics covered in the supplemental summer coursework. Students will take an hour-long assessment in August before the beginning of the school year.
This process is the last entry point into the advanced math sequence. Students who are placed in Math 2 will not have an opportunity to place into Advanced Math 3.
If you were enrolled in an advanced or honors course, or participated in an accelerated course sequence, you may take the placement test for Advanced Math 2 (incoming sophomores) or Advanced Math 3 (incoming juniors). This placement test will take place during orientation week in August.
Please email mathplacement (at) berkeley.net if you are a transfer student who was enrolled in an advanced, accelerated, or honors math course during the previous school year to register for a placement test.
