What's Going on at Longfellow?:

    • Uganda African American Library Project, see the 02/05/20 Etree for details on how to participate and support Longfellow in supporting others. We are building agency and empathy by giving our students an opportunity to support others.
    • Makers and Scholars: A powerful collaboration Christopher Oakes (Umjoa teacher) felt it important to create a classroom environment in which the aesthetics reflected the scholars who showed up daily to class. As he and Umoja scholars began to source materials and images they were challenged by the availability of resources to support their idea of project based learning resulting in authentic representation. Faced with this challenge, scholars decided to produce the images themselves, inspired by their own vision. To do this, they needed help and the scholars knew just where to find it; Ms. Jen in the Makers Lab! Since November Umoja and Makers Lab scholars have collaborated to create Afro-centric artifacts. Engaging in the burgeoning Longfellow Integrated Learning Framework, scholars learned and demonstrated their command of certain STEAM competencies. Additionally, this collaborative project afforded Umoja 7th & 8th graders an opportunity to embrace 6th graders and show them the "Longfellow way.” What transpired was an amazing display of what our scholars can accomplish when they work together, are given space to use their voice, and are provided proper resources. The work from this collaborative effort is currently on display for Black History Month. Please stop by to check it out! See pics below!!
