General:

• I'm extremely proud of the Longfellow team for working diligently to create a space for learning for our young Tigers in such a new dynamic. We've committed to working as a team to make it through this difficult time:
  • Early on in the Shelter in Place, many teachers began to reach out early to students to simply say hello and let them know we are thinking about them.
  • We handed out nearly 150 chromebooks at Longfellow alone, before the handouts moved to the district office.
  • Multiple multimedia efforts were made to ensure our students understood what was going on and how to navigate distance learning.
  • All classes are engaging in common core standards based work, with so many teachers going above and beyond the offered activity sets.
  • Our counseling team has gone above and beyond in reaching out to individual students and families to make sure they are okay.
  • Longfellow has a detailed, yet flexible, distance learning plan for the site to ensure as much continuity as possible.
  • Longfellow staff are making constant efforts to reach the students who haven't attended classes yet. Please urge your student to encourage their friends to check in to the Google Classrooms and the Office Hours when they talk with them on their other social media.

• BERKELEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS FUND EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM & Office of Family Engagement and Equity
  • Want to help families in need: basic needs like food, diapers, and hygiene supplies, in addition to helping with bills and rent.
  • Funds of up to $500 per family are awarded based on need, family size, and access to other available resources via local city and nonprofit organizations, government programs, etc.
  • BEFORE APPLYING - REVIEW OTHER AVAILABLE RESOURCES WITH THE FAMILY
  • APPLYING - COMPLETE EMERGENCY REQUST FORM
    • Emergency fund requests are completed by Family Engagement and Equity staff at our elementary schools and Berkeley High School, as well as counselors, teachers and administrators at our middle schools. (Just ask for help, Click here to submit a Help Form. The right Counselor or Admin. will contact you!)

• Chromebooks: What if my district chromebook stops working? What if I still need a chromebook?
  • The Tech department is having ongoing Chromebook support and distribution at the District Office Parking Lot (at 2020 Bonar). Families can pick up or exchange Chromebooks, and get technical support.
  • It's a good idea to send an email to Chromebook@berkeley.net, to give a heads-up. If your chromebook stops working or if you still need a chromebook come on the following days.
  • When:

Mondays: Noon - 2pm

Wednesdays: 3:30 to 5:30pm

Fridays: Noon- 2pm.

Where: The District Office Parking lot on Browning - just South of Addison.

• With Ms. Roa, our TWI Science teacher out on maternity leave and our limited availability of her bilingual sub, we recognized the added concern this could bring to the TWI program. We took a little bit of time (much appreciation to Ms. Patterson and other willing teacher partners) to create supplemental engagement options for these students and for our 7th grade TWI. An additional Google Classroom (OSB) was created for our 7th grade TWI students.
