Athletic Department Policies Agreement

Athlete Department Policies Agreement

Because participation in athletics is voluntary and all groups or organizations must exist within a framework of certain policies, rules and regulations, the Athletic Department has developed, in conjunction with the Athlete Code of Conduct, the following policies:

  • Student athletes must abide by all school policies as well as all league, section, state, and national rules and standards. All student athletes, parents/guardians, and coaches must adhere to these policies during the full duration of their season including all conditioning, regular season and postseason competitions.

  • Appropriate care must be taken of all equipment, school facilities, and other properties. Student athletes shall be held financially responsible for any damage or loss through their negligence, at the replacement cost. Student athletes cannot play in the next season of sport without clearing all financial responsibilities.

  • Student athletes shall report any injuries or illness to their respective coaches immediately upon occurrence. Competition cannot resume without a written release from a doctor if the injury requires medical attention.

  • Student athletes must have on file with the Athletic Director the following before they are permitted to participate

    • Completed, signed, stamped and dated physical examination (renewed every year)

    • Completed online Athletic Registration form (renewed every year)

  • Any student who did not start at Berkeley in their ninth (9th) grade year or who has not been at Berkeley for one year must see the Athletic Director and apply for a transfer waiver. This application must be completed prior to participation in games and/or scrimmages.

  • The student athlete is expected to attend all required practices, meetings, and contests. The appropriate coach shall be notified of an absence. Playing time is always a coach’s decision. A season of sport is not over until all league contests, section and state tournaments have been completed by the team or individual athletes. Refusal to participate through the end of the season shall result in the loss of any awards. Removal from the team due to discipline issues and/or academics will result in the loss of any awards or recognition.

  • Student athletes who quit or have been removed from a team must clear all responsibilities and obligations with the coach of that sport. Participation in the next season of sport cannot begin until the previous sport is completed.

  • Student athletes under any type of medication restriction, including medication, shall have a note from parent or doctor on file with the main office, Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer. This can be completed on the online Athletic registration form.

  • Student athletes who engage in any criminal activity or violations of civil law may be denied participation in our extracurricular program. Recognizing the varying degrees of the severity of the violations (misdemeanors vs. felonies), consequences for involvement may result in a minor reprimand or denial of participation depending on the nature of the offense.

  • The use of alcohol/tobacco/drugs while on a school team or a student at Berkeley High School is strictly prohibited. The first violation may result in suspension from practices and contests during the time of school suspension and/or removed from the team. The second violation may result in removal from the team. If a third violation occurs the student may be banned from all athletics during the remainder of time in high school.

  • The Athletic Department identifies that the state law prohibits purchase and consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors and the purchase and possession of tobacco products. It is also either a misdemeanor or a felony in this state to use, buy, or sell illegal drugs. Law enforcement personnel will be notified and legal ramifications may exist in the use or sale of, and purchase of, illegal drugs. It is the policy of the Berkeley Athletic Department that any action taken, under the general rules and regulations or specific rules and regulations, against an athlete can result in an indefinite suspension for the athlete from the team. An infraction must be observed by a teacher, coach, chaperone, administrator, school support personnel, school board member, a member of the law enforcement agency, or the parent of the athlete in violation.

  • Both the participating student athlete and the parents/legal guardian hereby agree that the student athlete shall not use androgenic/anabolic steroids without the written prescription of a fully licensed physician to treat a medical condition. Berkeley High School’s policy on illegal drugs will be enforced for any violation.

  • Student athletes may not play on outside teams, of the same sport, during the season of sport.
