Position Title: Head Varsity Coach - Field Hockey
Location: Berkeley High School
Stipend: $4,000 (plus MCAL playoff bonus)
Additional Staff Budget: $6,000 (to be used for building Varsity and JV coaching staffs, including paid assistants and volunteers)
Job Description: Berkeley High School is seeking a dedicated and experienced Head Varsity Coach to lead our Field Hockey program. Under the supervision of the Athletic Department, the Head Coach is responsible for the overall organization and management of both the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels. This is a unique opportunity to "reset" and build a vertically aligned program culture grounded in sportsmanship, skill development, and positive student-athlete experiences.
Major Responsibilities:
Program Leadership: Oversee all aspects of the girls' field hockey program, ensuring a consistent culture and philosophy from JV through Varsity levels.
Staff Management: Recruit, hire, and manage a staff of assistant coaches and volunteers. The Head Coach has an additional $9,450 budget specifically for building out these staffs.
Compliance: Ensure the program follows all rules and regulations of the CIF, NCS, WACC, and Berkeley Unified School District.
Coaching & Mentorship: Teach fundamental skills, physical conditioning, and game strategies while modeling the principles of a PCA "Double-Goal Coach" (striving to win while teaching life lessons).
Administration: Manage team rosters, build full-season schedules, and oversee the care, inventory, and storage of all uniforms and equipment.
Facility Management: Coordinate with the Athletic Department regarding practice times and help maintain the quality and upkeep of team facilities.
Safety: Prioritize student-athlete well-being, including injury prevention, proper warm-up techniques, and following all school disciplinary and safety policies.
Requirements (in order of importance):
Ability to set a positive example for athletes through appropriate language, respect for officials, and good sportsmanship.
Commitment to the academic success and character development of student-athletes.
Demonstrated knowledge of field hockey strategies and fundamental skills.
Current coaching certifications as required by BUSD and CIF.
Season Information: Field Hockey is a fall sport. The fall season begins in August 10th and concludes in mid-October, depending on post-season playoff advancement. Practices and games generally occur five days a week. Head Program coaches are expected to communicate with families and players in the preseason to arrange open field and weight room conditioning in preparation of the season.
