The core of the retreat is a significant dedicated time to write while being in community with other UC faculty.
We provide food, beverages, and space to support a productive and focused writing environment.
The writing sessions are the foundation of the retreat and comprise up to 12 hours of writing time.
We begin each day with an optional 90-minute workshop. We ask that you let us know at the time of your application whether you'd like to attend one or both of the workshops.
Writing with Purpose: Embracing your WHYs and WHOs
This workshop, given by Elena K. Abbott, PhD, offers conceptual and practical strategies to use at any point in the writing process. This workshop is designed to help you reconnect with your core motivating drive so you can cultivate a more rewarding writing practice, reduce writing anxiety, and get the most out of your writing time.
Workshop: Finding Grants and Writing Winning Proposals
In this workshop, given by the Berkeley Research Development Office, we’ll look at finding funding, reading and understanding funding calls or solicitations, deciding what to apply for, proposal review processes, and writing a successful proposal. This workshop will connect you with the tools at your disposal and introduce you to on-campus resources that can help you navigate the grant lifecycle. You will search for funding opportunities using Pivot, read sample solicitations in your field, and draft a one-pager that can be used to communicate with a program officer.
In addition to writing time and the two workshops, we are offering the opportunity to receive individual feedback on a piece of your writing. This is provided by Elena K. Abbott, PhD, a professional editor and writing coach. For this option, you will be required to submit up to 30 double-spaced pages of a chapter or article at least 2 weeks before the retreat (by August 4th). During the retreat, you will have a 60-minute session with Elena to receive feedback on this sample of writing. There are only 8 slots available for this offering. If there is more interest, we will choose participants based on their service history.
