Applying principles of gamification and user-centered design, I created the initial design concept and low, mid, and high-fidelity wireframes for Karibu AI’s dynamic and engaging onboarding journey that would empower new hires to swiftly integrate into an organization. Drawing inspiration from successful case studies, particularly the effective use of gamification in platforms like Duolingo, I sought to infuse the onboarding journey with interactive elements and thematic design. Through meticulous research, design exploration, and iterative testing, the project aimed to deliver a holistic solution that not only facilitated knowledge acquisition but also fostered a sense of excitement and autonomy among users.
The challenge was to seamlessly integrate new hires into an organization's culture and operations by utilizing a natural language chatbot that uses journeys, quests and challenges to gamify the onboarding process. Traditional onboarding methods often lack engagement and fail to provide clear guidance, leading to a disconnect between new hires and organizational objectives. By harnessing the power of gamification and leveraging the conversational interface of a chatbot, I aimed to create an immersive and interactive onboarding experience that not only educated new hires about company culture and processes but also empowered them to navigate their journey independently. This innovative approach not only addressed the immediate need for effective onboarding but also aligned with the organization's commitment to fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
My approach consisted of conducting user research to unearth pain points and preferences of new hires. Drawing inspiration from successful case studies, particularly Duolingo's effective use of gamification in language learning, the design exploration delved into incorporating similar elements into the onboarding journey. A key aspect was the integration of an AI Success Coach persona, named Buddy, who would serve as a friendly guide throughout the journey, offering support and encouragement.
Users would embark on quests tailored to their learning path, guided by their Success Coach, Buddy. These quests, enriched with thematic storylines and interactive elements, formed the backbone of the onboarding journey. Set against a captivating space theme, users traversed through cosmic realms, exploring company values on distant planets and engaging in team-building missions aboard cosmic space stations. Interactive quizzes acted as checkpoints, testing users' knowledge and skills acquired throughout their journey. Through this seamless integration of journeys, quests, quizzes, and thematic storylines, I aimed to create an immersive onboarding experience that educated and inspired users, fostering excitement and curiosity as they embarked on their cosmic voyage of discovery.
The ultimate goal of the project was to craft an engaging and intuitive gamified onboarding experience that addressed the specific needs of new hires while aligning with the company's objectives. This entailed facilitating a seamless transition for newcomers into the organization's culture and operational processes, enabling them to quickly grasp essential information and tasks autonomously. By fostering a sense of fun and simplicity through interactive design elements and clear progression markers, the aim was to enhance user engagement and satisfaction. Ultimately, the project aimed to contribute to higher retention rates, improved performance, and a positive employer brand perception.
