SESAME, Mathematics Education

Background:

Hi! I am a first year PhD student working with Professor Alan Schoenfeld. I am an aspiring math education researcher, and I am a recent graduate from UCLA (March 2021) with a B.S. in mathematics. In the midst of the pandemic, I have trained myself to be a guiding, supportive (online) math educator that focuses on fostering initiative and learners’ problem solving skills. Among many others, I am honored to be featured in this post, and I find it very inspiring to read the students’ reviews. Personally, I like hiking, staring at the stars, and meeting new (and great!) people.

Research Interests:

Research wise, I am aware that I am just dipping my toe into the water and that there are so many fascinating terrains unknown to me! Primitively, my research interests lie in (a) how mathematical thinking skills could be effectively fostered through heuristic pedagogy; (b) how mathematical thinking mindsets shape the way we learn and think; (c) how growth orientations (e.g., growth mindset) interact with mathematical teaching and learning, and how it informs us about pedagogical design; (d) what equity means in the context of mathematical teaching and learning, and how one may addresses it so that equitable access to high-quality, discovery-based mathematical experience is no longer a dream. Furthermore, I strive to develop a framework for heuristic approaches through which educators can effectively empower learners to discover and reinvent math for themselves.
