As a community focused on providing resources to keep all members of field teams safe, regardless of immigration status, we are committed to creating and sharing safety resources to prepare scientists for interactions with immigration enforcement agents. If you have resources you would like to recommend for this page, please email Mel Baldino (melbaldino@berkeley.edu).
In response to the growing threat of dangerous interactions with immigration enforcement officers in the field, we created the ESPM Field Safety Immigration Enforcement Response Protocol. This document provides recommendations for how to stay safe when
immigration enforcement activities are reported near the field site
field team members spot agents at the site
agents approach the field team
It also provides an overviews of your rights and how to be prepared for these interactions. This document can be printed and kept with the team in the field at all times.
The UC system created a pocket-sized Know Your Rights Card. This resource provides contact information for legal services and reporting agencies. It details your rights if you are in your home, taken into custory, or questioned.
The UC system published an Immigration Sweeps Toolkit, which details which areas are open to immigration enforcement agents, how to determine when agents can legally enter the room you are in, what legal rights the universities have against sweeps, and the legality of sharing personal information as an employee of UC.
To answer frequently asked questions for university employees about possible federal immigration enforcement actions on university property, look to the UC FAQs for Faculty, GSRs, and GSIs document.
To see the UC systems' official statements in support of students on campus and the cases in which immigration enforcement can and cannot approach students, see the Statement of Principles in Support of Undocumented Members of UC Community.
