After conducting the 2024 Field Safety Surveys across RCNR and IB, ESPM’s Field Safety Committee identified an unaddressed need. Of the respondents, over one third of UC researchers were paying out of pocket for all field safety trainings and supplies for their research. In addition, most respondents reported that they would feel more safe and/or confident in their fieldwork if they had more access to trainings, information, and physical supplies and resources.
The Field Safety Committee is currently addressing the desire for more information and trainings through providing resources online and hosting trainings each semester requested by the community such as crew member safety and sexual assault prevention. We are addressing the need for more physical supplies and resources through this gear sharing program, which we hope helps all members of the ESPM community feel safer on field projects and promotes a culture of thinking ahead and going into the field better prepared. We offer inReach communication devices, first aid kits, heat-related safety gear, safety vests with RCNR logos, car emergency kits, walkie talkies, and more!
If you feel as though your needs could be addressed better via the gear sharing program or other field safety resources, please contact Mel Baldino (melbaldino@berkeley.edu).
