Field safety plans are now required to be submitted to the department prior to all fieldwork! This page provides a template for field safety plans, example plans for research projects and field courses, and frequently asked questions about completing a plan.
In Fall 2025, we launched our pilot gear sharing program aimed at providing free gear loans to members of the RCNR community. By offering first aid kits, satellite communication devices, and other safety equipment to all level of student, staff, and faculty, we hope all members of the ESPM community feel safer on field projects and can promote a culture of thinking ahead and going into the field better prepared.
The ESPM Field Safety Committee hosts a variety of workshops for free each semester. These include graduate student focused workshops, sexual assault and harassment prevention, and Safety I vs Safety II. We plan to partner with groups on and off campus to provide additional trainings soon, such as bystander intervention and wilderness first aid.
