Jessica Ko has lent her expertise and abilities to develop a Berkeley Public Health (BPH) Events Accessibility Resource Toolkit (TBA).
About the work
As part of campus wide compliance, BPH is strengthening its effort to make our school more accessible. Accessibility is interdisciplinary and spans across all aspects of campus. This means there is an abundance of knowledge to support accessibility. This project aims to create a centralized location on the BPH website for all BPH staff, students and faculty with accessible resources. The goals of this centralized resource is to spread awareness and encourage people to be inclusive in their work at BPH and to inform staff of the existing processes and resources at BPH and across campus. In compiling this resource, BPH can solidify processes and highlight areas of improvement.
EHS HEERO Support
This pioneering initiative, driven by student efforts and feedback, will integrate environmental and social justice principles into the EHS/GHE curriculum, preparing students to emerge as leaders equipped to navigate and address the complexities of environmental justice.
Che Abram was invited to be a thought partner as the EHS/GHE discussed the many variable to implement this opportunity.
Mindful Masters UC Berkeley Wellness Grant Support
Mindful Masters (M&Ms) is a student-led initiative of BIPOC students dedicated to promoting holistic wellness and fostering a sense of community for their BIPOC colleagues. Mindful Masters organizes culturally responsive events integrating mindfulness techniques, therapeutic modalities, and social welfare learnings to address mental health disparities and marginalization. Mindful Masters strives to create a culture on campus where BIPOC graduate students can reclaim their sense of belonging and well-being.
Mindful Masters applied for Wellness Grant through campus entities and sought partnership with Dream to encourage long term sustainability of the organization.
Social Impact Innovation Grant Applicant Review Committee
The Social Impact Innovation Grant is a small grant program to seed multiple practice-based social impact projects developed by undergraduate or graduate students. The objective of this program is to encourage students to proactively identify public health challenges, engage directly with the communities affected by these issues, and devise sustainable, people-centered solutions that generate positive impact.
Che Abram was a member of a vast team of public health experts to review and evaluate the Social Impact Innovation Grant applicants during the first and second rounds. This led to a selection of 8 projects.
I was honored to partner with Julianna Deardorf, Quin Hussey, Lauren Krupa, Judy Smithson, and Seana Van Buren to fill the role of the Interim Assistant Dean for Students as Quin Hussey filled an interim position with our Graduate Division. My portion of the role involved:
Support for our admissions team: this included meeting with applicants, recruitment and yield events, reviewing some applications, responding to emails from prospective students/applicants, and being their liasion to the Dean's Office.
I shared interim responsibilities of the Funding and Admissions Manager position with Svetlana Battle, Derric Bynum, Kristine Doss, Lauren Krupa, Lori Nalbandian, and Usman Sajid. My responsibilities included recruitment and hiring for our new Funding and Admissions Manager, Yesenia Mercado; processing the academic year 2024-2025 MPH fellowship award offer letters; and working with fellowship selection committees to award three fellowship opportunities to currently enrolled students: one Dr. Cheri Pies Award and two Dr. Roselyn Lindheim Awards.
Student Government: I supported the student government with gaining adequate resources for Spring Prom and helped check in prom attendees during the event. I was unable to provide support related to student government equity training and hope to rectify this during the academic year 2024-2025.
Student Emergencies: we were able to provide $2700 to students with one time emergencies. This financial support comes from our alumni established student emergency fund which also supports the food pantry and community closet within BPH.
