Part 1: plate 1 (10:10:1 toluene : Ethyl Acetate : Acetic Acid)

After visualizing the spots under UV light, use tweezers to dip your plate into a jar of iodine. For more information about staining TLC plates with iodine, consult the "Visualizing the Plate and Analyzing the Data" section of the explanation of TLC in your lab textbook.

A student standing in front of a fume hood removes the lid from a glass jar containing dark, reddish brown crystals. The lid is labeled "IODINE CHAMBER." The student tilts the jar and shakes the iodine crystals to one side, then places a TLC plate in the jar using tweezers and replaces the lid. We watch the plate being stained with iodine at 3x speed. Over time, yellowish-brown spots appear on the plate. The student then removes the TLC plate from the jar.

Copy down the stained plate, making sure to label the compound spotted in each lane of the plate, the solvent used to develop the plate, the solvent front, and how each spot was visualized. Then, calculate Rf values for each spot and add them to your data table.
