Part 1: plate 1 (10:10:1 toluene : Ethyl Acetate : Acetic Acid)

Now that you have your first plate developed, you can use several methods to visualize the spots.

First, you can note down whether you can see spots with the naked eye.

Next, place the plate under a UV lamp and, using a pencil, circle the dark spots that show up.

A student wearing gloves, a lab coat, and safety glasses steps up to the UV lamp, which is enclosed in a box with a rubber flap covering the front side. She turns on the lamp, picks up a TLC plate, and places it inside the UV box under the UV lamp. She then looks through the goggles on top of the box, grabs a pencil, and uses that pencil to circle UV-active spots on the TLC plate. The student removes the plate from the box and turns off the UV lamp.
