Florence Zhu
Found all prototypes to offer valuable features that could enhance the shopping experience by saving money and discovering deals.
Expressed high likelihood of using the app if it were available, especially attracted by the community features and personalized notifications.
Suggested integrating a reward system for active community members or those who share deals frequently to encourage more engagement.
Magnus Allen
The participant expressed a desire for fine-grained control and personalization over the types, timing, and categories of notifications to avoid them being seen as invasive or annoying. For example, allowing them to silence notifications during productive times.
The participant had concerns about potential "spam" from cart item discount notifications, suggesting they should only be for high-value items like flights or concert tickets and wanting customization options.
The participant was open to using the community-driven discount platform but wanted an incentive system, such as a rewards program for sharing discount codes, to encourage participation.
Brennan E.
Emphasized the need to have more personalization options within the app to select which stores you want to recieve discounts from.
Voiced concerns about the community needing to be regulated and monitored to ensure safety and fairness.
Highlighted that location based notifications may not work for everyone; some do not share their location with apps so this feature would not be user friendly.
Zeynep Kilicalp
While found the location feature extremely helpful in terms of cutting down on in person shopping time, expressed concerns over sharing her location as this is a very private information.
Found the community page not as useful and instead suggested stores should have partnerships with the app, and award loyal customers who make a purchase through the app.
Too many notifications might make the in person shopping less enjoyable, thus they should be highly personalized.
Jocelyn Ding
Interested in using features such as notifications for discounts on items currently in the cart - features that offer passive saving opportunities
Emphasized necessity of customization in notifications - a system that tailors alerts based on preferred brands or categories
Voiced concerns regarding the possibility of overwhelming notifications, particularly with location-enabled features
Main Learning 1: Effectiveness of Personalized Notifications
Learning: Personalized notifications were highly effective in enhancing user satisfaction, particularly when they aligned with the user's immediate context or shopping preferences. However, there is a need for deeper personalization to cater to specific user interests.
Participant Quote: "I loved getting alerts on deals when I was right by the store, but I'd like it even more if the deals were tailored to what I usually buy."
Relation to Objective: Directly addresses the primary objective by highlighting the effectiveness of personalized notifications and pinpointing an area for further enhancement.
2. Main Learning 2: Community Feature Engagement
Learning: The community feature fostered a sense of belonging and was appreciated by users, but there were concerns about the reliability of shared content. This indicates a requirement for mechanisms that can verify or rate the validity of shared deals.
Participant Quote: "The community section is great for finding out about new deals, but sometimes I wonder if the deals are too good to be true."
Relation to Objective: Ties into both the primary and secondary objectives by evaluating user satisfaction with the community feature and identifying an improvement area to enhance trust and engagement.
3. Main Learning 3: User Interface and Interaction Design
Learning: While the prototypes generally met user needs for efficient coupon management, the navigation and user interface design were areas highlighted for improvement, with users suggesting more intuitive layouts and clearer categorizations.
Participant Quote: "Navigating through different sections needs to be smoother. I sometimes find it hard to go back to where I saw a particular deal."
Relation to Objective: Directly addresses the secondary objective by pointing out specific aspects of the user interface that could be refined to improve the overall user experience and ease of interaction.
Please put these in
Change 1: Enhanced Personalization for Notifications
Feedback Supporting Change: Several participants expressed that while the location-based and cart item discount notifications were useful, they desired a more personalized experience, suggesting filters for interests or preferred brands.
Proposed Change: Implement a personalization feature that allows users to set preferences for the types of deals they are interested in, such as specific product categories, favorite brands, or price ranges. This could be set up during the onboarding process and adjusted anytime in the app settings.
Change 2: Verification System for Community-Shared Deals
Feedback Supporting Change: The community feature was well-received, but there was concern about the reliability of the deals shared. Participants wanted a way to know if a deal was legitimate and not too good to be true.
Proposed Change: Introduce a verification system or a user rating system for deals posted by the community. This could involve a simple upvote/downvote mechanism, user comments, or even a verification check for deals that have been confirmed by a certain number of users or by the app administrators.
Change 3: Improved Navigation and Clarity in the Community Section
Feedback Supporting Change: Some users found the community-driven discount platform a bit overwhelming and cluttered, making it hard to find worthwhile deals. Some also suggested that they might be overwhelmed by the unfiltered notifications thus prefer more personalized ones.
Proposed Change: Redesign the community section to include better categorization and filtering options. Introduce sections or tabs based on deal types, popularity, or expiration dates. Adding a search functionality within the community section could also help users find specific deals more efficiently.
In a future iteration of the study, we would make a concerted effort to include participants from varied geographic locations and different shopping interests, such as those who primarily shop for groceries, electronics, fashion, or services online. This targeted recruitment strategy would aim to capture a more nuanced understanding of how geographic diversity and shopping category preferences influence user expectations and interactions with the app, thereby enabling the design team to tailor features more effectively to meet diverse user needs.
