HOW DID WE CALCULATE COSTS?

1. We calculated each purifier's long-term (5-year) cost to run.

2. We broke each purifier's 5-year cost into 3 smaller figures: the cost of the initial unit, the cost of the electricity needed to run the unit, and the cost of the replacement filters. 

3. We found each purifier's 1-year cost of electricity needed using this calculator based on the wattage of the unit and the price of electricity in the state we are in (California). To get the 5-year cost of electricity, we multiplied the 1-year cost by 5. Note that this assumes running the purifier 24/7, which is recommended in places with moderate/high air pollution.

4. We found the cost of each purifier's replacement filters (both HEPA and carbon filters). In all the purifiers we recommended, the HEPA and carbon filters were offered together in yearly or 6-month kits. We multiplied the price of yearly kits by 4 and 6-month kits by 8 to cover years 2-5. (Note that all units we recommend come with a set of filters that lasts for the first year.)

5. We found the total 5-year cost of each purifier by adding the initial unit cost, the 5-year cost of electricity, and the 4-year cost of replacement filters.
