WHAT IS AN AIR FILTER?
IT BEGINS WITH AN HVAC SYSTEM...
You can install an air filter in your HVAC system (if you don't know what this is, see here) to clean the air circulating around your house.

The most important aspect of filters is their MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value), which ranges from 1 to 16. Filters with high ratings are thicker and more effective than those with low ones. We recommend purchasing MERV-13 filters - they strike the best balance between performance and longevity.
If you want to clean the air in your whole house at once, install a MERV-13 air filter that matches the dimensions for your HVAC system (the brand doesn't matter).
For more information, see slide 4 of the Google Slides we created.
HOW DO I INSTALL AN AIR FILTER?
Ensure your HVAC system is turned OFF.
If the filter goes in your HVAC unit, remove the filter cover OR
if the filter goes in your air return unit, the grill is held by clamps. Use a screwdriver to pull them back.
If the filter is in your HVAC unit, pull it out and look at the dimensions printed on the side OR
if the filter goes in your air return unit, pull the old filter out and then do the same as above.
In either case, your new filter must match the dimensions. If you have a very very old HVAC system, check that it can handle a MERV-13 filter.
Install the new filter WITH the arrow on the side facing up/toward the unit to match the airflow through the system.
Check and replace the air filter regularly, every ~3 months or more often during bad air pollution periods.
