Cadets wear the Navy Service Uniform once a week on either Wednesdays or Thursdays depending on assigned campus, but are subject to change depending on unit events.
No, students are not required to enlist in the Navy, or ANY military branch following NJROTC participation. However, the experiences our cadets gain throughout our program will set up the basic foundations and structure required to be a member of our armed forces if that is a route your student is interested in.
NJROTC is a high school program that provides a positive peer group to help students do their very best academically by teaching time management, critical thinking, public speaking, interpersonal communication, self-awareness and teamwork preparing students for college and beyond. NJROTC is a CTE H2 pathway offering students the opportunity to gain Merit or Distinction for graduation.
Students join NJROTC for many reasons, but the reason they stay with the program throughout HS is the sense of family and belonging to something larger than themselves.
You learn a variety of academic and life skills in NJROTC. Students study leadership principles, leader actions, citizenship, time management, goal setting, planning and SAT/ACT/ASVAB prep. Students have the opportunity to learn important life skills like money management, college financing and collaboration skills, as well as get a jump on college application process.
Students receive credit for completing each level of NJROTC (Naval Science 1-4), P.E. credit, and Health credit.
NJROTC is an elective, and just like any other class, students sign up for the class and must stay for the entire semester. If a student decides not to continue at the end of the semester, NJROTC is removed from their class schedule following a meeting with their counselor. Students are afforded a two week grace period to drop a course or change their schedule at the start of each semester.
NJROTC is just like any other class and there are assignments, tests and projects graded on percentage basis (0-100%). Students are required to wear the uniform at least once a week and participate in physical training, both of which are graded activities.
