"For you it was a home, but for me it was a cage. I'm sorry if I destroyed it, but maybe it was made to be destroyed"
A quote said in Vasilis Katsoupis' Film, Inside (2023) Which I talked about in the previous blog Inside; An Art Thief Locked In. If you haven't read that blog yet, you should because I talked about lots of interesting things back there!
Interiority? The quality of experience when being inside. My professor asked me, "What is the different between inside and outside?" and I answered, The difference between Inside and Outside is the location of a place, object or person. If something is inside, it is found inside a place, like a house or inside something small like a rabbit hole or a bag. Outside on the other hand is something that describes a place, object or person that is found on the exterior. Outside a home where there are trees, grass, birds or buildings with city lights and roads. Many people, including me, can find the inside a safe place because it protects us from the outside’s chaos. But outside can also be comforting when we see people or do experience things that we find the comfort of being inside, outside. And with that said I believe that all interior designers can resonate with this because it is their job to make their clients feel at home with putting different aspects of their personality or what makes them truly comfortable and secured. There was this recent podcast I listened to, Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain, Emma, a well known social media influencer/public figured recently got a beautiful home and what she talked about in her vlog was the importance of practicing sustainability and making homes feel like a home.
She didn't like the way people would often get cheap materials and this wouldn't last for a long time, especially when people interior decorate. She talked about how people would decorate a home just because of trends you see in Pinterest, like choosing hanging lamps just because it looks "cool", and often we would get tired of these objects. Emma is no professional at all but I have to agree with her because it is true! She talked about we should decorate a home because it means something to us deeply-- maybe like a painting that reminds you of your mom, or a vintage edition of your favorite book. I believe that if we practice that mindset, we as interior designers can improve the quality of our works and the spaces we will be working with.
Interior Designing is no joke that why it is a whole profession. I am just a student entering this industry and I am already working sleepiness nights building my future and the people I am going to serve for. With the mindset of sustainability and innovation I think we could easily turn a space into someone's place calling it their lovely home.
With Interiority, we also talked about the outside home experience where we don't feel at home when staying at a hotel or a friend's house.
I have several experiences of the phenomenology: Namamahay. My family and I love to go to places when we have time to spare. Writing this now in a single bedroom located at Tagaytay; I have lots of critiques with my room. As a guest, I do not feel at home at all but yes, I feel safe. Entering the small room, I am greeted with a window and a single bed on the right. I hate how the mirror is pointed at the window and how the bed covers are bright red. Even if the walls are painted white with bright wooden floors, it is very dark in here, Probably because of the lighting. Not to mention.. This Monstrosity:
Staying here for two nights made me appreciate more in what I do, because people who run resorts, hotels, resting places NEED US! and running these kinds of places, it's the first thing people should think of.. "Is this place pleasing? safe? comfortable?" and the answer shouldn't be "Pwede na yan." (That's good enough)
Studying Interiority is important and it should be kept in mind all the time :)
