This is a photo of a barn in a modern, rustic style. Honestly, this barn does not have too much of a personality because of the lack of color, textures and forms which makes this space a bit boring to my eye. So, how can we make this barn better?
Mike Pizarro asked, How aware are you of what's going on inside you when you start a design project?. Awareness, specifically awareness to one’s self is considered to be one of the most important ingredients to interiority.
To unfold the meaning of Interiority, Interiority refers to the inner space, condition, or a state of being that contributes to one’s level of awareness. Now going back to Pizarro’s question of how self-aware I am when I start a design project, I can honestly say that I am aware enough to be able to have a set of ideas of how I want a space to turn into but not to the level of awareness of where I should be.
I learned that oneness goes beyond singularity and to be one with self is to face authenticity. When looking into my designs, I often show my emotions rather than my own environment. I believe that an environment does not have meaning without some sort of reaction or feelings tied to it. That it is just a space of materials and forms, without the questioning of comfortability or feelings.
Pizarro then asked these questions:
- when you look at yourself, what do you see?
- when you look at yourself, what do you realize?
- are you aware of these dimensions within you?
- do you recognize what these dimensions contribute?
Which I believe are all asking the depth of awareness you are with yourself. Awareness is important when dealing with the complexity of design as it is influenced by the complexity of a designer’s experience of themselves and the world around them- and the depth of design depends on how deep a designer’s self-awareness is.
Dimension of oneness is then brought up to talk about the importance of the spiritual body, mental body, emotional body and physical body when it comes to design. The spiritual body corresponds with your beliefs with the divine- and to experience this is through lighting. Mental body on the other hand deals with rationality, questioning the right usage of forms with great reason. Separately, color is often associated with the emotional body as color influences our feelings and how we see the world around us. Lastly, the physical body is the use of materials and the composition of textures.
After Pizarro’s talk, design is supposed to be approached with the complexity of phenomenology, thus creating deep and meaningful designs that are not just aesthetically pleasing but significant to creating a full experience.
To conclude, we can fix the barn by adding a bit of a personal touch from the client (person living in the space) and the designer. Personally, I would add a family photo instead of the bird, some accents on the table, maybe an ocean blue flower vase in the center, china plates, gold flatware and finally, a beautiful woven rug under the table.
(wish I can photoshop better but this is the idea)
Short A's for the Q's
Q: How aware are you of what's going on inside you when you start a design project?
A: I am aware enough of my own personal style, and ideas of how I want the space to be depending on the design problem and requirements.
Q: When you are looking at your designs, is it a reflection of the things around you? or of the things inside you?
A: I believe that it is a reflection of the things inside of me. Looking at my designs, I often design with expression because I strongly believe that art evokes emotions.
Q: how are you responding to your design projects?
A: My designs age like wine, as my designs evolve in time with my design knowledge. My previous designs are a reflection of my previous knowledge and experiences and I often question myself how I can improve my designs next time.
Q: have you been future proofing your designs
A: Yes, I like designs that are timeless rather than something that are trendy.
Q: When you look at yourself, what do you see?
A: When I look at myself I see a person who went through struggle
Q: When you look at yourself, what do you realize?
A: But with that identity of struggle comes strength and power. I realize that I wished for who I am today, and that is a person who is grateful and resilience.
Q: Are you aware of these dimensions within you?
A: I am proud to say that when I do think deeply of the dimensions within me, I am able to distinguish and realize the shallow thoughts to the deep depths of my subconscious.
Q: Do you recognise what these dimensions contribute?
A: With that ability to recognize these dimensions, I am able to use my knowledge for the purpose and influence of creativity.
