The study of poetry can be daunting for students, but it can also be enjoyable if you give it a chance. Poetry allows us to express emotions, and true feelings as well as make observances about the world around us. We don't write poetry in this class (although you can if you want to ); our focus is analyzing poetry. The units below refer to the units in the AP English Literature Course and Exam Description.
This introductory unit asks students to start looking more deeply at how poets use words and language to create images and emotions. We start developing a process for reading and analyzing poetry: DIDLS (Diction, Imagery, Details, Language, Structure).
In this unit, we will focus on the Shakespearean sonnet and closed form poetry, and the lyrical poetry of the Romantic poets in the lat 18th and early 19th centuries.
This final poetry unit will serve as a review of the concepts covered earlier in the class, and culminates in students writing their final poetry analysis essay.
