What is Registered Youth Apprenticeship?
Youth Apprenticeships are for students who have explored a career pathway by either taking courses, working in a part-time job or other informal activities, and wish to continue preparing for a career in this pathway. Because of the number of programs of study within the career pathways programs can be personalized to a unit of study . Whether you are planning a limited or expansive post-secondary education after high school, this program may be for you!
Key Components of Youth Apprenticeship
The program is offered one or two years during Junior and/or Senior year.
Students may stay in one career pathway for two years or after completing year one may request a change to a new pathway, program and or employer.
Part-time jobs match the students career interests.
Student applicants must interview with the STC Coordinator , where formal courses and informal experience is assessed to determine genuine career interest.
Students work a minimum of 450 paid work hours per year during part of the school-day, after school, weekends and over the summer. BHS students may earn up to 2 elective credits per year for YA.
Regardless of the number of work hours earned over the summer months, YA's can only count 200 hours toward the 250 hour total; therefore YA's do work every week during the school year.; roughly 10 -15 hours /week.
The YA Work Release policy allows for two blocks every other day or one block every day. YA are required to attend all BHS required advisory periods, class meetings, testing dates etc.
Students enroll in pathway-specific concurrent related instruction. In many cases earning industry certifications, dual college credits, advanced placement or credits at post-secondary schools.
Students must maintain 70% or better in all of their high school courses, including related coursework taken outside of BHS.
Students gain necessary academic, technical, and employment skills needed to build a success career.
Students creates priceless career and network connections.
Students not accepted to Youth Apprenticeship are encouraged to seek a non career-based part-time job to build employments skills through Wildcat Work Experience.
