Some of the lessons are longer than we are used to. But that doesn't mean students are required to sit the whole time!
Consider the objective - is it to have a deep conversation, share a fact, practice spelling words, etc?
Instead of having student sit and talk, try the following:
-Inside outside circle
-Four corners
-Turn and talk
-Gallery Walk
-Mingle Mingle
More to come!
Some very basic and effective classroom management strategies can escalate student engagement! Don't forget the ENVoY [Catalyst Approach] strategies that our district has provided training for. Strategies such as "Above, Pause, Whisper" can gain and keep students' attention on your lesson. "Exit Directions" clear up any confusion about what students should be independently working on. PBIS "Be RED" expectations are an excellent way to set expectations so you can have fun and learn together as well!
