Unit 2: Compounds

Unit Objectives: At the completion of this Compounds unit, 

1. I can give examples of proof that a chemical reaction is occurring. (CK12 Sections 2.13, 2.14, 2.15, 2.16, 2.17, 2.18)

2. I can explain, based on repeating patterns of core & valence electrons, the organization of the periodic table. (CK12 Section 6.4)

3. I can identify, apply, and explain the periodic trends of ionization energy and electronegativity. (CK12 Sections 6.15, 6.17, 6.21)

4. I can compare the relative sizes of parent atoms and their resulting ions and explain why this is so. (CK12 Sections 6.15, 6.20)

5. I can compare and contrast ionic and covalent bonds addressing the nature of the attraction between bonded atoms, the placement of bonding electrons, the directionality of each bond, and the polarity of each bond. (CK12 Sections 8.3, 8.4, 8.6, 9.2, 9.4)

6. I can draw Lewis dot structures for simple molecules and ionic compounds. (CK12 Section 9.5)
