Unit 3: The Periodic Table

Unit Objectives: At the completion of this Periodic Table unit,

1. I can describe the organization of the periodic table according to Mendeleev and Moseley. (CK12 Sections 6.1, 6.2, 6.4)

2. I can locate the various groups and periods in the periodic table, state the special names, and describe the general properties associated with each. (CK12 Sections 6.8, 6.9, 6.10, 6.11, 6.12, 6.13, 6.14)

3. I can identify where metals, non-metals, and metalloids are located on the periodic table and explain how their physical & chemical properties differ from each other. (CK12 Sections 6.5, 6.6, 6.7)

4. I can identify the state of matter each element exists in at room temperature. (CK12 Section 6.4)

5. I can predict, based on its position in the periodic table, the properties (appearance, electronegativity, and ionic charge) of a given main group element. Give examples of other elements that would have similar properties and explain why they would have similar properties. (CK12 Sections 6.15, 6.17, 6.19, 6.20, 6.21)

6. I can write electron configurations of atoms and ions using noble gas notation. (CK12 Section 5.20)

7. I can explain, based on repeating patterns of core & valence electrons, the organization of the periodic table. (CK12 Section 6.4)

8. I can compare the relative sizes of parent atoms and their resulting ions and explain why this is so. (CK12 Sections 6.15, 6.20)

9. I can identify, apply, and explain the periodic trends of atomic radius, ionization energy, and electronegativity. (CK12 Sections 6.15, 6.17, 6.21)
