Homework

Two major goals of 5th grade are organization and responsibility. Homework is an opportunity to practice these goals and to ensure a successful year!

Students should expect about one hour of homework each night. Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday, while weekends are a good time to work on long-term projects, practice math facts, and do independent reading.

Furthermore, as a school, we strongly suggest that parents encourage their children to practice basic math facts and do independent reading each night for a total of 20-30 minutes beyond the suggested homework time.

Vocabulary (Wordly Wise) and spelling (Spelling Connections) homework is assigned every other week. Either vocabulary or spelling is assigned on a Monday and students have until Thursday to complete the work. I encourage students to space out the work and do one section each night. Practicing a bit each day helps as well, for the quiz on Fridays.

Math homework is assigned each night and is always intended to practice the skills learned in class. If your child feels unsure about how to do the work, he/she should revisit the lesson on the reteaching page of the workbook and/or view the lesson's video online (Envision).
