Reading/Writing

The fifth grade reading curriculum is composed of a variety of texts and students will be exposed to many stories, nonfiction texts, myths/legends, poetry and more! Throughout the year, students will continue to build their core reading skills to identify main ideas, supporting evidence, point of view, and theme.

In writing, students write in all three genres of writing in fifth grade in the form of essays, responses to literature, journal entries, reports, short answers, narratives, poetry, science notes, and more! Fifth graders will learn to write with more structure and organization, provide stronger evidence for main ideas, describe events with more focus and detail, and grow their previously learned skills and confidence in writing. Furthermore, fifth graders will continue to follow the writing process of brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Revision skills continue to improve with the addition of specific descriptive words and phrases and supporting details to enhance their writing.

Website

Students create electronic portfolios (websites) with Google Sites. This is a way for students to organize their work in a meaningful and creative way and share their progress with their classmates, teacher, and parents. Each week students will reflect on their work and include samples from all areas of the curriculum along with pictures, recordings, and videos. They will also set goals for themselves and respond to essential questions from various units.

Magazine Subscriptions

Students will read a variety of texts across the genres with Storyworks articles throughout the year, engaging in discussions, writing responses to literature, acting out scenes, and thinking further about what they're reading. Students will also read Time For Kids, exposing them to non-fiction articles about current events. This magazine comes weekly and students will be expected to read it at home. We will discuss the articles in class along with various activities to develop deeper thinking about the issues.
