BirdFest and the Changemaker Projects are a collaboration between Greenway students and staff, the volunteers and staff of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge and Friends of the Refuge. Each class has chosen a way to take action in our community and the world in general.

Mrs. Janssen's Class
We are learning that we can reuse items that might be thrown away to create things that help make our classroom, community and Earth even more beautiful. We are building in Maker Space with Happy Trash, creating works of art by reusing materials, and hope to celebrate our learning by creating wild flower seed balls from recycled paper.

We are going to be changemakers by seeing how many things we can do to be helpful and try to get to 100.
1st grade
Ms. Griswold's Class
We've been learning all about plants and animals while studying interdependence. We decided as a class to plant a tree to provide shelter for small animals and critters, to clean the air and provide oxygen, to provide shade, to help deforestation and to provide a space for our community to gather and play.
1st grade
Mrs. Lewis's Class
We are creating stepping stones for the bee friendly garden in front of our classroom so people walk on the stepping stones instead of the plants.
2nd grade
Mrs. Meyer and Ms. Tera's Class
We are creating informative posters about the importance of planting native plants in our area to support pollinators, birds and animals.
3rd grade
Mrs. Sprague, Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Barringer's Class
We are leading an effort to update and redesign the Greenway Garden outside our classrooms. We would like to recognize and show respect to the enduring relationship that exists between the Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories by planting all native plants and creating a self-reflection space for visitors to consider the past, present, and future of the land we live on. In redesigning and planting this new garden, we are making a promise to be stewards of the land.
4th grade
Mrs. Griffin and Ms. Thurston's Class
We learned about salmon, discussed ways people can help protect salmon and keep Oregon waterways clean so fish and other animals can thrive, and released our salmon fry into the river. We created salmon art for our school to remind our community to take action to protect salmon and waterways.
5th grade
Mrs. Sprague, Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Barringer's Class

Mr. Cartwright's Class
Our changemakers project is interviewing Pre-K kids about what kind of a playground they would like, since they don't meet the age requirement to play on the big playground. We will shadow them on a recess time and my kids will observe and collect information about what they like and dislike in regard to their playground ideas.
5th grade
Gideon, Bella, Ariah and Ms. Sangster
The friendship bench is a place where anyone can go if they are in need of a friend or someone to play with. The sign says "friendship" in all of the 19 languages represented at Greenway because everyone belongs here and is welcome at the friendship bench.
