When searching for specific content in YouTube, you can narrow your search using their filtering options. Popular options include type (video, playlist, channel), duration (short or long), upload date, and features (closed captioning for example).
A playlist is multiple videos grouped together. You can easily create a playlist to save like content together (i.e. trench warfare). Playlists can be shared with students as a resource for additional study. NOTE: You have to log in and create a channel before you are allowed to add videos to a playlist.
You can turn on captions by clicking the CC. This will put auto-generated closed captions on. You can also hit the gear icon and change the language so this essentially translates the video.
If you click on the three dots next to the save option you have the ability to open up the transcripts of most (not all) videos. To find out how Eve used YouTube transcripts for writing lessons, check out her BLOG POST.
There are lots of Keyboard Shortcuts when interacting with YouTube videos. For example you can press F to go to full screen and click the left or right arrow to jump backward or forward 5 seconds. Pressing L will leap forward 10 seconds in the video or J will jump back 10 seconds. You can use the spacebar to play and pause.
If auto play is enabled that means the next video in YouTube’s queue starts playing automatically whether you want it to or not and even if it is appropriate or not. If you don’t want YouTube to automatically play the next video in their lineup there is an “auto play” toggle switch you can turn off.
If you don’t want the ads, follow up videos, comments, or suggested video list to show on the screen for students use the site ViewPure to open up your YouTube videos. The site has a button you can drag to your bookmarks bar that makes it simple to use.
If you are a K-2 Teacher and you want to direct students to watch a specific YouTube video, you can automatically generate a QR code for any site, including YouTube, with a QR code extension you can add to Google Chrome. Students can use their iPad camera to scan the QR code and be directed to open the site in Safari
