In my Freshman year, I was taking the mandatory JAGS classes including JAGS 9 English with Mrs. Mazur. After reading the Odyssey and having a proper understanding of the symbolism and journey told within, My class and I began a project. The project consisted of choosing three locations, studying their customs and laws, planning events and meals, and finally coming up with the price of the entire trip. Through continuous studying I decided on Delhi India, Nairobi Kenya, and Athens Greece. After choosing activities and studying the laws and regulations of these places the total expense was $5815.72.
This project correctly correlates with one of the ISSN goals in recognizing perspectives. I feel that while studying the customs and laws of these foreign countries I properly “explain the perspectives of other people, groups, or individuals as distinct from one’s own perspective.” Throughout the presentation I explained laws and customs that differ from the United states and how they might expect changes to their daily life conduct.
At the beginning of the second quarter we finally reached into the huge era of imperialism. During this period highly developed countries like the UK, France, and the US began to colonize less developed countries and bring them under their rule. This led to strong countries becoming more powerful while the weaker countries were either absorbed or isolated. Because of this widely experienced period many political cartoons were released showing funny interpretations of actual events. Our job in this unit was to find the connecting factors in the pictures and understand the actual meaning of the image.
I feel this connects directly to the goal in recognizing perspectives. Since these posters were originally from places all over the world, countries could be shown as villains in them mattering on the origin. This allowed us to learn more about the period by not only seeing the US point of view but also different countries giving us the most unbiased point of view we could have.
As this is the beginning of our year in JAGS biology we are yet to truly learn anything. The first unit being about cells allowed us to learn terms and famous people that could come up letter in the class. Having just begun the year my class and I knew little about cells other than their small and make up everything. Without this term most people would be unable to identify and understand latter class materials that were made up of or required the combination of cells.
I feel that this unit falls directly under the category of investigating the world called “Poses a research able question on a local, regional, and/or global, and explains its significance to the global community. As cells are everywhere and learning better taught us about how things are made up. Also explains the discovery of most of these minuscule particles allowing for the class to learn the best ways to view these cells if needed.
I was approaching the end of my fourth quarter in Spanish 2. While learning food terms, my dad went online and found one of the foods that was said to be delicious and bought it. After he received it he gave it to me and recommended sharing it with the class so that they could taste some of the food of a foreign country. After asking my teacher and receiving the correct permission to bring it in, my classmates and I tried it and had a blast that day.
I feel this falls perfectly into an example of recognizing everyone's perspectives. As this is a foreign food they were unknown to, they reacted differently. Due to the high content of salt some people disliked because of that but, also some people liked the texture the salt added to the meat. Overall, I had a lot of fun watching my classmates try it and had even more fun trying it myself.
During the summer, I was voted to receive one of the high awards of Boy Scouts. This was the Order of the Arrow or the OA. It is one of the biggest achievements a scout can receive, it requires first class rank, 15 camping days with the troop, and to get the majority of votes in your troop's youth. After being called out at summer camp, I then had to attend an ordeal that was meant to push my limits and test me physically and mentally. While it was a challenge at the time, I am proud to say that I survived and went on to be accepted as a member of the OA.
I believe this event falls into this goal to recognize perspectives because it allowed me to witness daily life in what could be a third world country. As I stated it tests the applicants physically and mentally. One of the big things is sleeping on the ground using only a tarp and sleeping bag. Some others include being unable to talk at all during the tests, to only be given minimal amounts of food, and to do large amounts of physical labor. Overall, I believe that it helped me feel like I was experiencing what a person living in a third world country’s daily life is.
