In the summer directly before my senior year, I got the opportunity to do and complete an Eagle Scout project. My Eagle Scout project was the installation of a flag-retiring fire pit at the Ohio Veterans Memorial Park. Throughout both planning and doing the actual action of creating the fire pit I experienced many things both negative and positive. There were many set packs when doing this project but with the help of others and a little bit of my creativity, we were able to continuously push through everything that was thrown at us. I'm happy to say that the project got done in the end and is now still standing and can make the beneficiary happy that it is now installed on their property.
This event connects to taking action as it is almost a perfect definition of what it means to take action. My Eagle Scout project fulfilled every role possible for the same as doing my Jags Capstone. I had to spend lots of time planning it out. I had to spend lots of time asking for donations and or fundraising for money so that I could pay for it. and then finally I spent time with people who are willing to volunteer time to me installing and creating a thing that will continue to stay where it is for many years to come.
In Mr Marlett's class Poli sci we are challenged to constantly look at past events with our modern brains and make decisions that others have made before. One of the most memorable is the Supreme Court Justice cases. In this unit, we as students are tasked to hear Supreme Court cases and the evidence that was given and make a decision on what amendment was accused of being disrupted and what side the Supreme Court would vote on. the main point of the unit was to teach about the Bill of Rights Amendments, especially the First Amendment but it also helped to give an inside look at how decisions were made back then.
This connects to recognizing perspectives because we as students are looking at issues that have already been decided long before we were even born and making a decision on it using the info that our brain creates from its experiences in the current modern time. It was really interesting to see just how far off from the Supreme Court we were even if it seemed like our opinion made more sense than theirs. it helped to give an inside look at what the social norms of society back then had even been just within the last few decades.
For this assignment, we were tasked to do an experiment in real life where we would break a societal norm and observe people's reactions to our disturbance. The main objective of this assignment was to see how Society has created norms which even though they are unsaid are practiced by everyone in public. The only requirements of this essay were to not get into trouble or get our professor into trouble. For me, I decided that at a cross country meet I would boo both teams rather than cheering them on like I usually do. At most meets like this cheering is a normal thing that most people do as it is a concurrency. To break that I took a lot of willpower from me and was rather difficult with my mindset.
This connects with recognizing perspectives as I witnessed many different reactions to my breaking the societal Norm. I got many people who had negative reactions to my disturbance as it was unsupportsman-like and caused anger between teams rather than camaraderie. As more people described why they were angry with me, I realized that it matched the same reason why I was resenting myself for having to do this sort of action. This assignment overall helped me to realize how much no matter who you are or where you come from most people will do the same things and think the same way against those who are attempting or carrying out hateful actions.
