the year of investigating the world
the year of investigating the world
For my Junior year, I worked on a podcast that analyzed how African American hair is perceived within American culture. This topic allowed me to interview multiple amazing women and business executives about their experiences with their natural hair. This experience fulfilled the recognizing perspectives pillar for JAGS. This project demonstrates the deep understanding that i gained of American culture and influence. This project reflects growth as it shows a divergent perspective typically not considered. To complete this project, I researched the issue, interviewed professionals, conducted interviews of those around the community and then complied it into a podcast.
For AP Seminar, I conducted research on healthcare disparities within the African American Community. This topic allowed me to analyze common problems within American society that complicate healthcare issues. This experience fulfilled the Investigate the World pillar for JAGS. This project required a deep understanding of the issue and research. This demonstrates my proficiency as it demonstrates that I can investigate a complex issue and combine it with another issue to find possible solutions. This artifact changed how I see issues within the Black community. I learned how to do large scopes of research, present complicated ideas, and craft multipage reports.
This year, I partook in the Model United Nations Class offered by the JAGS curriculum. I attended the Cleveland MUN summit and represented Kenya in the African Union. The following article is my position paper on the African Commodities Strategy. This artifact demonstrates the communicative ideas pillar of JAGS. This paper was to provide a write-up on my country's opinion on the African Commodities Strategy. This assignment required me to broaden my mind to ideas and solutions that were complicated to understand and even harder to communicate. This increased my global competence by requiring a full immersion into my country of choice. I conducted research and connected divergent ideologies to form this paper. This artifact broadened my understanding of global politics, I learned how to write a position paper.
This year, I participated in Mock Trial. I competed at the district and regional levels. At the district level, I won the best attorney award. This win was a highlight of a week that was slightly bittersweet. The night before, I had been in my home country of Kenya, worried that I would not make it in time for the competition. This moment was a result of a lot of grit, sacrifice, and work. The largest thing I learned from this is never stop adapting and don't underestimate how strong and how far you can go on no caffeine and 2 hours of sleep. I learned how to argue and communicate effiecntly even when i was completely exhausted.
