Old Hollywood Documentary

Mr. Gillette
Junior Year- Communicate Ideas: Anticipates how a specific audience with particular perspectives will interpret communicated information; and adjusts the communication to meet the audience’s specific needs.
During the second semester of 2023, for AP English Language and Composition, Mr. Gillette tasked his students with creating a documentary about any topic that fascinated them. The topic that my group chose was Old Hollywood and how it poorly treated its actors and didn’t care about their health. We specifically focused on Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland. For Judy Garland, we talked about how she would be given amphetamines to keep her awake for long periods of time so she can work, then given sleeping meds. She was only allowed to receive four hours of sleep before she’d be woken up again. In addition, she was oftentimes harassed by the directors of the show and called a “fat little pig in pigtails.” As for Marilyn Monroe, we talked about how she was practically a slave to the film industry and how her mental illness was well-documented, but no one seemed to care. We compiled all this information into a fun documentary and submitted it.

Junior Year- Take Action: Identifies opportunities for personal or collaborative action to address a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon in a way that is likely to improve conditions.
For my reflection on history, it was very hard to find something that would fit the pillars of JAGS best, since during AP US History, all we really did was learn content and write essays. However, we did have a few projects, and the one where we got to make a movie poster about a Supreme Court Case of the early 1900s really stuck close to me. What my group did, which consisted of Maryanne, Olivia, Evan, Dylan, and Evelyn, was to create a movie poster that argued in favor of the idea of evolution for the Scopes Monkey Trial of the 1920s. John Scopes was a teacher in Tenessee who got in a lot of trouble for teaching evolution to his students, even though it was a scientific principle that he just wanted to educate his students on. This was a moment when fundamentalism and modernism clashed. What we did with our poster was make the background a mix of an image of a jungle and an urban area to show how those ideas conflicted with one another in terms of humans evolving from monkeys.

Junior Year- Communicate Ideas: Selects and applies appropriate resources, such as technology and media, to communicate and collaborate with a range of diverse individuals.
During the third quarter of my junior year, in AP Calculus AB, Mrs. Litman tasked the entire class with completing a scavenger hunt where we’d be competing against her three other periods. In order to encourage us to try our hardest to win, she decided that the winning period would receive donuts. For the scavenger hunt, there were three locks that needed to be opened, and in order to open the boxes, we had to go around the classroom and solve math problems hidden under chairs, under desks, and even on the ceiling. The questions focused on many different concepts, such as finding the limit, taking the derivative, finding the antiderivative through integration, and much more. My class period, which is sixth, unfortunately, did not win, however, we did come in second place, and we were very proud of such an accomplishment.

Junior Year- Communicate Ideas: Demonstrates an understanding of a specific audience by communicating and collaborating using verbal and non-verbal behavior, languages, and strategies that are appropriate to the specific audience.
During the fall of my junior year, I and a few other students had the pleasure of being able to take a school trip to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. We participated in numerous activities, such as swimming in waterfalls, going to the beach, trying authentic Colombian food, learning about the island’s history, and viewing magnificent architecture. In order to respect the customs and traditions of the island’s inhabitants, I purely spoke Spanish whenever asking for directions or conversing with one of the native islanders because I feel like if you’re going to a foreign country that has its own language, one should make the effort to learn that language and attempt to speak it. This came easily to me because I’m already in AP Spanish, and my Spanish teacher, Mrs. Munoz, ensures that her students are always speaking Spanish in the classroom. During the trip, we also painted a playground for little students in preparatory school.

During my junior year of high school, I noticed that there were a large number of black freshmen coming into the school, and I thought back to being as young as them and wishing that there was a community or group of people within the school that I could join that had similar life experiences as me. Due to this, I founded the Black Student Union in an attempt to empower other black students at Jackson High School. I collaborated with Maya Fulmer and Nadia Watts Jackson on this. Throughout the year, we’ve had fun games played, such as Jeopardy. We’ve had special guest speakers, such as Morris Ervin, as well as Dr. Ngozi Nkangineime, a Harvard graduate and a current psychiatrist in New York City.
