JAGS Go Night Book Drive

Sophomore year- Take Action: Identifies opportunities for personal or collaborative action to address a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon in a way that is likely to improve conditions.
During sophomore year, for GO Night, the JAGS teachers tasked us with finding an issue or problem in our own community, addressing it, and most of all, taking action! Both Maryanne and I had heard that students at the elementary schools weren’t reading as much as they should be. I thought back to being this age and absolutely despising reading. However, as I grew older, I realized reading could be fun and an amazing hobby if you find a book that’s perfectly fitted for you. So, as part of taking action for Go Night, we collaborated with head members at Sauder Elementary School and did a fun book drive. We collected all types of books, whether they be children’s books, young adult novels, or works of nonfiction. We even advertised the book drive at all of our club meetings, such as meetings for the Spanish National Honor Society. We then compiled all the books and donated them to the elementary school.

Sophomore Year- Recognize Perspectives: Expresses a clear personal perspective on a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon, identifying an influence on that perspective.
For my reflection on history, it was very hard to find something that would fit the pillars of JAGS best, since during AP US History, all we really did was learn content and write essays. However, we did have a few projects, and the one where we got to make a movie poster about a Supreme Court Case of the early 1900s really stuck close to me. What my group did, which consisted of Maryanne, Olivia, Evan, Dylan, and Evelyn, was to create a movie poster that argued in favor of the idea of evolution for the Scopes Monkey Trial of the 1920s. John Scopes was a teacher in Tenessee who got in a lot of trouble for teaching evolution to his students, even though it was a scientific principle that he just wanted to educate his students on. This was a moment when fundamentalism and modernism clashed. What we did with our poster was make the background a mix of an image of a jungle and an urban area to show how those ideas conflicted with one another in terms of humans evolving from monkeys.

Sophomore Year- Communicate Ideas: Select and applies appropriate resources, such as technology and media, to communicate and collaborate with a range of diverse individuals.
During the second half of my sophomore year, for Summit Night, the sophomores were tasked with creating a documentary that addressed any national or global issue that is occurring or has occurred in history. For my documentary, Brady, Michael, Maryanne, and I chose to focus on the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. The AIDS crisis was something that was poorly handled by both citizens and the government, and it was downplayed numerous times by the Reagen Administration, especially by the secretary of state. For the people we had to interview, we decided to talk to Dr. Young, who was in medical school in New Orleans during the 1980s and was able to see how stigmatized the disease was. We also wanted to investigate how AIDS is currently being treated in Nigeria and Thailand because the disease is still a very big issue there today. We talked to a Nigerian doctor and he was able to tell us about what steps the Nigerian government has and hasn’t taken to help the fight against AIDS.

3rd Quarter Tablas de Noticias

Sophomore year- Investigate the World: Analyzes and integrates evidence from sources to develop a well-supported response to a global question
For Spanish 4, all throughout the year, Mr. Fradl required us to complete 5 tablas de noticias each marking period. A tabla de Noticias is basically when a student goes on a Spanish news website, reads an article about anything that interests them, and writes a summary of the article as well as any Spanish words in the article that are unfamiliar to them. For my 5 tablas, I chose to write about how astrologists are saying that the universe is slowly dying, how Spain has started to vaccinate children in order to protect them from the increasing threat of contracting the COVID-19 virus, how a famous Spanish singer got into an accident and went into a coma, how Bruce Springsteen sold all the rights to his songs to Sony Music, and how problems with coding have damaged the careers of hundreds of computer programmers during Christmas time.

Spotify Podcast
Sophomore Year- Recognize Perspectives: Explains the perspectives of other people, groups, or individuals as distinct from one’s own perspective.
Throughout my entire life, I have always really loved reading because it’s a very fun way to escape the world and live the lives of thousands of people that don’t even exist. But as I read more and more books, I really wanted to understand what goes on in authors’ heads as they write and why they made certain decisions when crafting their stories. So, I started a podcast on Spotify with one of my best friends from East Canton High School where we interview some of our favorite authors and post the recordings on Spotify. We’ve interviewed some really amazing people, one of them being Ayana Gray, who is the New York Times Bestselling author of Beasts or Prey. She has premiered on Good Morning America because of the success of her book and it’s even being turned into a Netflix film. So, it was extremely fun to interview her and we’ve talked to other best-selling authors such as Liz Lawson, Rory Power, Namina Forna, and Kalynn Bayronn.
