All About Me
My name is Ava Brown and I love getting out of the house and exploring the world, in our community or abroad. I chose to do JAGS because I loved the travel opportunities and the opportunity to learn about other cultures and experience them. This was very important to me because I like to be able to understand why everyone does what they do. JAGS was a successful way to do this as well as give back to the community. Right now I have over 90+ service hours and I love giving back to the community. More about me, I have two sisters, Audrey, who's 21 and goes to Akron, and Kylie, who's 12, plays soccer, and is thinking about joining JAGS in high school. My parents are Kyle and Andrea Brown, and they always support me so much. I have two dogs, Chewie and Charlie, and three cats, Stormie, Sitka, and Peanut. I am very active in school and outside in my community. Ever since my 8th grade year, I have been a head coach for 3-4 year olds through Jackson Fury Soccer Club. I also play soccer year-round for this club as well as playing high school soccer. I have played soccer since I was 4 and hope to continue doing so in the future. In school, I am president of the math honor society, president of Bear Hugs, and an officer of the freshman mentors. I am also an active member in the national Spanish honor society, the national honor society, Student Council, Spanish club, and Clothing for a Cause. I love giving back to the school and leading the other students because I love watching them grow and learn. Living the journey is such a hard path, but JAGS has helped me be able to get through everything. JAGS taught me mroe then just school it taught me how to be a betetr student, with the four pillars. Investigate the world, communicate Ideas, recognize perspectives, and take action.
My JAGS Journey
I choose JAGS because I wanted to be more connected to the world and learn about others while traveling the world with my friends!
"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" - Lao Tzu
Investigate the World: My Go night and Summit Night project helped me investigate the world, as for each project, I had to pick a different country and present everything I learned about it. For Go Night, I did the country Saudi Arabia, and for Summint Night, I did the country Peru. This was one of my favorite projects as I loved investigating what these countries were really about.
Recognize perspectives: Our trip to Heifer helped me recognise perspectives as we were put into random groups and each assigned a country. However, my group got stuck as the refugees. This helped me realize just how bad refugees have it and how they have to go and steal food or the necessities to survive if a country does not help them. And the problem with that is, it's not normally the refugees' fault for being a refugee.
Communicate Ideas: My genius project helped me communicate Ideas, and I had to present to my English class on the right way to make chocolate chip cookies. This was a very enriching experience as I got to learn multiple things from my classmates as well when they communicated their ideas.
Take Action: My genius project also filled the JAGS pillar of take action because I made cookies for a couple of weeks with different combinations to find the perfect recipe that I could share with my class. I tried multiple things like baking soda vs baking powder, and Crisco vs Butter. However, all of this problem-solving helped me create the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe for my classmates.
Investigate the World: Our trip to Costa Rica helped me investigate the world because I was able to immerse myself in their culture. I was able to go to places I would never dream of being and see how the natives live their daily lives. Costa Rica was by far my favorite trip and gave me so many opportunities to investigate the world
Recognize perspectives: Our Go Night project on hunger helped me recognize perspectives as my group volunteered at the local church, and when we were volunteering, we realized that everyone can suffer from hunger no matter where they're in the world. We realized just how serious a problem hunger is.
Communicate Ideas: My documentary from this year really accomplishes the goal of communicating ideas because we had to reach out to three experts, and two of them were in either China or Norway. This was a super fun experience as I built a very good relationship with my expert, Hazel, who is a college student, and we still talk to this day.
Take Action: We were able to take action throughout our GO night project. We volunteered at River Tree and helped organize their food bank around the holiday time to make sure the staff could easily hand out food to those who needed it. This also helped the staff keep inventory and check what they needed to get more of in order for each family in need to get their necessities.
Investigate the World: The Europe trip from my Junior year successfully fills the pillar of Investigate the World, as we were able to go to multiple countries and learn about their cultures. For example, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, and Switzerland. This trip was able to teach me so much about the world and learn what things hold special meanings in Europe compared to America.
Recognize perspectives: The Europe trip also helped me recognize perspectives because I was able to immerse myself in their culture and do things that they do in their daily life, but I do not live in Europe. I was able to recognize the importance of the culture of each country I went to and enriched myself in it to make myself more in tune with the world.
Communicate Ideas: My Spanish Discussions relate to the JAGS pillar of communicating ideas because Kate and I had to communicate each week in a foreign language to our peers. This helped us feel more comfortable speaking Spanish and helped us realize that it's okay to make mistakes because the people you are communicating with can usually infer what you are trying to say.
Take Action: The AP Calculus Workshop I went to with Alleigh represents the pillar of take action because Alleigh and I took it upon our selfs to go to a workshop with people we may not know to prepare ourselves for the end-of-year test. This proved to be very successful as I learned multiple tips and tricks that helped me a lot in areas I was not quite sure how to solve. This made me more confident going into the test, and it's because we took action and decided to go to the workshop. ow does your artifact(s) meet the above?]
