ENGLISH -Genius Project
Throughout 10 weeks I created a garden from scratch I went through processes of trial and error and learned the importance of optimism and persistence. This project was very open-ended and gave us students an opportunity to build, create, or research anything we wanted. Though serving as a project that was supposed to be something we were excited about, many of us including me learned a valuable lesson on procrastination and lack of motivation.
I'm very appreciative of Mrs. DePriest being able to assign this project, I learned lessons that we are taught over and over with a new first-hand perspective. I had previously never been a procratinationer until this project. Each week we were required to have updates on our progress and in the beggining I would wait until Thursday night and sometimes even Friday morning to complete these progress checks. Seeing how being rushed and not put together made me feel I learned that being ahead is very important and that even if doing the work in the moment seems frustrating that it pays off in the end.

‘CO-CURRICULAR/EXTRA CURRICULAR’ -Heifer
During Heifer I learned very well how to communicate with others and I learned myself that I could achieve things I assumed that I couldn't. The memories I made there are some of my favorites from freshman year. Prior to Heifer I had never been in a scenario where I needed to communicate with other people in means of "survival" there was definitely a learning curve there for me as typically I am a very independent person and like things done a certain way. I forsee that lesson of learning how to communicate with others helping me in the future of JAGS with the various group projects we will do for the rest of my high school career. From spending time with my friends to joking around with my teachers Heifer showed me how so many different people can get together and work to "survive". I enjoyed essentially having one big sleepover with my friends.
At Heifer I learned that I am able to take action even if it starts out small. I don't have to change the world in one action I can do many actions to make an impact on as small as one person and it will change their whole life. Solving world problems is a big challenge one that many people can't just do by themselves. If I myself can make an impact on one person's life I believe that is a huge accomplishment.
HISTORY- League of Nations Games
During Freshman Year world history with Mr. MarLett I learned a lot about how the government and the UN has evolved and came to be overtime. It showed me that things have not always ran as smoothly as they do to this day. Being in JAGS a lot of the projects and perspectives we look at in the classes are through the United Nations and their sustainable development goals. Learning this my freshman year I can forsee this being a good way to set me up for future projects.
The way this game was structured was in the way that groups of people were each different countries and you had to act as your country through the duration of the game. I was a smaller country during this game and seeing how the League of Nations would dismiss a lot of the issues that would happen to smaller countries helped me recognize how overshadowed a lot of countries in our world were and still are to this day by larger more powerful countries.
WORLD LANGUAGE - Hispanic Heritage Project
The Hispanic Heritage Project in my Spanish class this year helped me to communicate ideas to those of different languages. We learned basic surface level spanish but it was definetely enough to be able to communicate! This project I chose to highlight from the year was one that helped our class to explore the Hispanic culture and how they celebrate their different cultures. I did some research about famous artists and even recreated some artwork. I also cooked empanadas which were harder to do than I thought!
This projected helped me to appreciate other cultures and communicate ideas about their traditions. This helped to show me the similarities and differences I share with the Hispanic cultures. All helping me to become globally competent and be able to engage with those talking about cultural traditions!
Biology - Summit Night Project
During Biology class freshman year me and a partner created this poster about Indonesia and how they have made efforts to abide by sustainable development goals 13 and 14. Goal 13 is Climate Action and 14 is Life Below Water. Learning about the ways Indonesia has been affected environmentally and the ways they are trying to combat these issues was very interesting. Being a smaller more costal country in the ocean Indonesia is more heavily affected by tsunamis, hurricanes, etc. Combating these issues in their country is far more costly then it is for us in the United States.
This helped me to recognize that being environmentally friendly is not as easy for the middle income countries who are repeatedly devastated by natural disasters. Though they can put monetary efforts into creating an environmentally friendly country they also have to put monetary efforts into rebuilding and aiding the people of their country. This helped me to be globally competent by showing me that though we judge other countries for not being environmentally friendly we also have to consider the focus they are putting on the people of their countries and that the people come first.

GO Night
Recognize Perspectives
For Global Opportunities Night freshman year me and my three other group members were assigned two countries and we assigned to investigate current events in the countries, historical context of the countries which in our case we researched the revolutions each of them had previously gone through, and lastly to connect the two countries with a sustainable development goal that they both are currently trying to successfully abide by.
As a group we chose to focus on UN Goal 6 which is Clean Water and Sanitations. We research and studied how Peru and Venezuela connected to this goal and what they have done to ensure their countries have clean water considering the disastrous pollutions that has environmentally affected their countries. Whether it be due to human actions or naturally occurring in nature each country has made various efforts into cleaning up their water yet still falling short esspecially in Peru. This project helped me to become glabally competant and helped me to not take the water I drink for granted. As perviously I knew there were issues regarding clean drinking water though I didn't realize just how severe they were and how many people that it truly affects each day.
