ENGLISH - Social Issue Research Paper
During my second semester comp 2 we were assigned a semester long research project surrouding a social issue that meant something to us. For my topic I chose school gun violence, I chose this topic because I wanted to investigate the root cause of this issue that has only grown in the United States and research and dive deeper into the possible solutions to this social issue.
I was forced to recognize perspectives during this semester and entire process as gun violence and control can be very controversial. I worked to find solutions that abide by those in favor of gun control and those who are against. Gun ownership is apart of the Constitution so finding solutions was difficult to come by. To get more insight I interviewed two people from the University of Akron. One was Micheal Gentithes who is the Dean of Law at UOA, and Noah Fritzs who is also apart of the Criminal Justice and Law department at Akron. Both came from very different backgrounds and perspectives and gaining their insight on the issue of gun violence helped move my essay forwards. This project taught me how to control my bais, personally I heavily favor gun control but not all people do and asking society to give up their rights is simply not constitutional. After realizing this I learned how to look at solutions to gun violence from both perspectives, overall growing my global competence as a JAGS student.
‘CO-CURRICULAR/EXTRA CURRICULAR’ - Europe Trip
The JAGS Europe Trip has been my absolute favorite memory thus far in the JAGS journey and possible even my life. I learned so much about the way people live there and how it drastically differs from the way we live here today. Prior to going to Europe I had some general basline knowledge about the history in each city, but from the guides and tours that we went on I learned so much more and it was so facinating to hear all the things that happened while standing in the same place it happened.
This trip will be forever something I am greatful for that I was able to experience. I am so proud of myself for working to pay for this trip and going out of my comfot zone and being far away from my family for a week. This trip made me more confident in myself and my abilities as a JAGS student. I investigated parts of the world I didn't even know existed! Like Liechtenstein for example, I knew it was a place but I had no idea it was its own separate country in Europe so investigating and learning about that country and some of the history it entails helped me to become a more globally competent JAGS student.
WORLD LANGUAGE - Familia Groups
Over the course of my junior year me and 3 of my other classmates were paired up into a familia. Over the course of the year we had to do various family activities and presentations all in spanish. We had to introduce our family and our careers, the country we are traveling to, go on the flight, act out an injury, etc.
Overall, spanish 3 has helped me the most so far to be able to communicate with those of different languages. The conversations and presentations we did within the class where ones that you would have everyday with native spanish speakers which overall helped me to become a more globbally compentent JAGS student and better communicate idead on the global scale.
For this assignment, we were tasked with researching and reporting different genetic disorders. My group and I chose to report on Huntington's Disease and Timothy Syndrome, two rare but serious genetic disorders. The assignment required that we outline the causes, pattern of inheritance, symptoms, treatments, and advancements of technology and research of each disorder. We created a presentation and poster with pictures and real data to demonstrate and teach our classmates about our research
This project alligns with JAGS in regards to the pillar to investigate the world. Through research into unusual genetic diseases widespread among people all over the world, It helped show the different access to science people have and how lucky we are to be in a time period with such vast and great advancements. The creative process was organizing information into a neat and understandable presentation and learning about how these disorders impact individual lives as well as entire communities. This helped increase my scientific interest and compassion and sharpened my research, teamwork, and communication skills. By doing so, I was more personally attached to global citizenship, seeing how science can be a useful tool in bringing about improved health outcomes around the world.
MUN- Resolution Writing
This Model UN project put me in the role of the United Kingdom delegate. The topic I chose to focus on was immigration issues in the UK, and my job was to write a resolution that dealt with things like human rights, border control, and helping refugees. My resolution, called "Fighting the British Border," strived for keeping families together during immigration, creating programs to help immigrants adjust to life in the UK, and forming a UN Immigration Processing Council to speed up the asylum processes. I also called for ending the UK's hostile environment policy because it hurts immigrants and takes away their rights. All things that would help to improve immigrations processes
This paper helped me grow as a JAGS student, especially in ways of how action can be taken I had to learn about real world problems and think of a variety of solutions. I realized immigration isn’t just about laws and government but rather it’s about real people and families and their safety. Writing and presenting my resolution helped me understand how to use research and facts to make good arguments. Most of all, it showed me how countries can work together to protect people in need, and it made me want to keep learning and helping others around the world.
