Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

Olweus Curriculum Overview

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) prevents or reduces bullying in elementary, middle, and junior high schools (with students ages five to fifteen). OBPP is not a curriculum, but a program that deals with bullying at the schoolwide, classroom, individual, and community levels.

The program will transpire in the following manner for the 2017-2018 school year:

Kindergarten through 2nd grade will have Olweus one time weekly for 25 minutes.

3rd through 8th grade will have Olweus one time every other week for 45 minutes.

Once a month, I will teach a lesson to the 8th grade class. The 8th grade class will then divide into groups and teach this lesson to Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade homerooms during the next bi-weekly Olweus day.

Homeroom teachers in 5th-7th grade will be responsible for all of their bi-weekly lessons, and homeroom teachers in every other grade will be responsible for planning their lessons when I or the 8th grade students are not teaching.

Students will engage in age appropriate activities on topics that include, but are not limited to:

• What it means to be a bully
• How to handle anger/emotions
• Respecting differences
• Getting along
• Doing the right thing in a difficult situation

Lessons taught by me (and subsequently, the 8th grade) will begin with a story or discussion followed by an activity to reinforce what students have learned.
