M2: DQ1 Vocabulary

Life Cycle- a series of stages a living thing goes through, from birth to death.
Reproduce- to make new organisms (offspring, babies)
Classification- the method of grouping things according to their shared qualities or features.
Incubate- to keep something (such as eggs) in the right conditions for it to delvelop.
Adult- fully grown, mature.
Offspring- a new organism or organisms made when something reproduces, the next generation.
Embryo- a developing baby animal that hasn’t hatched or been born yet.
Yolk- the yellow part of a bird's egg.
Shell- the protective outer layer of an egg.
Membrane- the thin layer between two substances.
White- the part of an egg that is white in color and surrounds the yolk.
Fertilize- to join an egg or seed with a male cell, so that it can start to develop into a new plant or animal.
Germination- the stage in a plant’s life cycle when a seed starts to grow into a plant.

Week 3:

Past-Tense Verbs

A past-tense verb tells about an action that has happened.

Add -ed to form the past tense of most verbs:

touch + -ed = touched

jump + -ed = jumped

Drop the e and add -ed to regular verbs that end in e:

whistle – e = whistl + ed = whistled

exercise – e = exercis + ed = exercised

A regular past-tense verb’s form is used with both singular and plural subjects in simple and compound sentences:

I whistled.

They exercised.

Abbreviations and Name Titles

An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word. It ends with a period.

teaspoon = tsp.

gallon = gal.

Titles before a name and initials are abbreviated and capitalized. Official titles of people can also be abbreviated.

Abbreviations for geographical locations, such as street, road, and avenue, are capitalized.

Don’t try to sound out an abbreviation. Instead, read aloud the word the abbreviation stands for.

Present-Tense Verbs

A verb’s tense tells when the action takes place. Present tense verbs tell what happens now:

The cat drinks from the bowl.

A breeze blows softly.

Add s to most present-tense verbs with singular subjects. Add nothing to present-tense verbs with plural subjects. A verb must agree in number with its subject:

She cheers for the home team.

They cheer for the home team.

He skates around the block.

They skate around the block.

Singular: I look, you look, she looks,

Plural: we look, you look, they look.

Week 1:

A complete sentence has a subject and a predicate.

The subject tells what or whom the sentence is about:

The girl ran around the track.

Mike and Joe jumped over the fence.

The predicate tells what the subject does and has a verb. Identifying subjects and verbs can help students when writing:

The girl ran around the track.

Mike and Joe jumped over the fence.

Quotation Marks and Colons in Time

Use quotation marks to show that someone is speaking. Quotation marks come at the beginning and end of a person’s exact words. The end punctuation goes inside the quotation mark.

Quotation marks are also used to show that the exact words from a text are being cited.
