M3:DQ2 Vocabulary

Organism- any living thing, such as plant, or bacterium
Ice Age- a very long period of time when the Earth’s temperature is lower, resulting in the growth of ice sheets and glaciers.
Rain forest- a region in the tropics with many trees and lots of rain.
Desert- an area of land that receives very little rainfall.
Palentologist- a scientist who studies fossils
Extinct- no longer in existence; when no individuals in a species remain.
Grassland- a large area of land that is mainly covered in grass.
Fossil- the preserved remains or traces of ancient plants and animals.
Megafauna- large animals, especially those that weigh more than a metric ton.
Arctic Tundra- an environment near the North Pole with very cold and windy weather, short summers, and long winters.
Frozen fossil- an organism that was trapped and frozen in place for thousands or even millions of years.
Ocean- a very large area of water between continents.

Week 3:

Adverbs That Tell How

An adverb describes an action verb. Most adverbs that tell how an action takes place end in -ly:

He paints beautifully.

Everyone cheers loudly.

Adverbs can tell the place, time, or manner an action takes place. Some adverbs answer the question how?

We are going slowly.

Tina cut the paper carefully.

Adverbs serve the same main functions in simple, compound, and complex sentences.

Week 2:

Adjectives That Compare

An adjective that tells what kind or how many is a descriptive adjective:

That is good pizza.

Use comparative adjectives to compare two nouns. Superlatives compare more than two nouns:

My second draft is better than the first.

She won the prize for the best photograph.

Add -er to an adjective to compare two nouns:

My bike is faster than yours.

Joon can jump higher than Eli.

Add -est to compare more than two nouns:

He is the sweetest boy!

I bought the cheapest hat.

Adjectives

An adjective describes a noun. An adjective usually comes before the noun it describes:

I have a blue jacket.

Some adjectives are descriptive. They tell what kind of person, place, or thing the noun is:

We have a small dog.

Some adjectives tell how many:

Jack has five guitars.

Some adjectives are limiting, such as this, that, these, and those:

She gave me that book.

Coordinating adjectives are two or more adjectives that describe the same noun in the same way.

It was a cold, dark day.

Adjectives serve the same functions in simple, compound, and complex sentences.
