Lesson 1 - Research/Investigate
INTENT: Children will research and find out about playground equipment that exist today.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children will share their experiences of going to a playground and the play equipment they enjoy going on. They will take a close look at how the playground equipment works and moves. Children will draw their favourite piece of playground equipment to form a group playground.
IMPACT: Children are able to share their experiences of playgrounds and know how some of the playground equipment works and moves.
Lesson 2 - Focussed Skill
INTENT: Children will investigate ways of joining different materials together.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children will be given materials, such as paper and card. They will practise folding, cutting and joining them together using masking tape, glue or cellotape.
IMPACT: Children are able to fold and cut a piece of paper/card and join two pieces of paper/card together using adhesive.
Lesson 4 - Make and Finish
INTENT: Children will make their free standing piece of playground equipment.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children will use their design and the materials they identified that they would need to create their models.
IMPACT: Children are able to use a variety of skills to make their free standing piece of playground equipment.
INTENT: LO: I can research existing products and suggest suitable materials.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children found out what a flag was and that the symbols often mean something in particular on flags of countries. Children discussed which materials would be appropriate to use to make a flag from and gave reasons why. they looked at a flag and explored how it was made.
IMPACT: Children know what a flag is and its purpose. They were able to suggest suitable materials to make it from.
INTENT: I can thread a needle and learn how to sew using a running stitch.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were shown how to thread a needle (large eyed needle) and how to sew a running stitch using a card template. Children worked with a partner and practised threading a needle and sewing using a template.
IMPACT: Most children were able to thread a large needle and sew around a template using a running stitch.
INTENT: I can make my flag.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children first printed their design onto the flag using a template and dabbing paint onto the materials using a sponge. They then used a needle and thread to sew a running stitch down one side to make a channel. Through the channel a stick was placed to make their flag!
IMPACT: The children are now able to print and sew a running stitch onto fabric.
INTENT: I can research vehicles and know wheels and axles work.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were introduced to the new vocabulary; wheels, chassiss and axles. They learnt about each job these parts do. They looked at a selection of toy cars and identified the mechanism and its parts. They also learnt about Henry Ford.
IMPACT: Children were able to identify the chassiss, wheels and axles on a car and know who Henry Ford was.
INTENT: I understand what makes wheels stop working properly and can make an axle.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were shown how an axle works and how it is attached to the wheels. Children had a go at making their own axle and was shown how it fixes to the chassis with an axle holder. Children discussed why triangular shape wheels will not let the vehicle move. They were shown different vehicles that had a problem. They identified the problem and suggested ways to fix it.
IMPACT: Children were able to make an axle and keep the wheels firmly on the straw. They were able to identify why the vehicles wouldn't move and suggest ways to fix the problem.
INTENT: I can make my vehicle with moving wheels and axles.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were provided with the materials and equipment needed to make their models. They either made a model by themselves or with a partner. They focussed on making their wheels and axles and attaching them securely to the chassis. They showed resilience and perseverance when they found it tricky.
IMPACT: Most children were able to make a model of a jeep with wheels and axles.
Intent: I can evaluate my vehicle.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were given the opportunity to discuss as a class their final model. They talked about what went well and what could have been done better. They completed a class evaluation.
IMPACT: Children could evaluate their final model and whether the wheels and axles worked and were attached correctly.
