ENRICHMENT

Greek Day

To finish our final Year 5 topic 'Greece and our Green Earth', we had Greek Day.

This consisted of Greek food tasting, creating Greek artwork and competing in our own Olympics. For food tasting, we tried some famous Greek snacks including olives, pitta and Greek yoghurt. We were surprised at how many things we enjoyed! We also created a range of Greek artwork. We made some mosaics, made laurel wreaths for our headbands and created some colourful Greek pot pictures too. After lunch, we got to compete in our very own Olympic Games and earned points for our houses. Our events included sprints and jumps.

SBL Experience Day

At the end of Term 6, SBL very kindly invited us to take part in an experience day at their school. We split into four groups and had the opportunity to participate in a number of different activities. Some of us did PE, science, art and DT throughout the course of the day.

It was a fantastic experience and it gave us a great opportunity to experience what it's like at a secondary school.

Mosque Visit

We were very lucky to be invited to visit Easton Jamia Mosque as part of our RE unit in Term 6. The Iman showed us around the mosque and explained how each area was used. He also taught us about the 5 pillars of the religion and helped us to develop our understanding.

Camp at Hooke Court

In June, we had an amazing time at camp! We took part in some really enjoyable activities including den building, longship making and cooking - some people even got to gut a fish!

On day one, we split into our two groups and headed down to Hooke on the coach. When we arrived, we started our first activity - group one design longships and group two did some cooking. In the evening we went on a beautiful night walk around the local area and connected with nature.

The next morning we were up bright and early, ready to start our next activity. Throughout the day, we built dens, created tribal chants and designed tribal face paint on each other. The instructors taught us a fun game and we played each other in our tribes. In the evening, we sat around the campfire and listened to Greek myths before acting some out ourselves. It was so much fun watching everyone's performances.

On our final day, group one and group two swapped our activities around from day one. Group two enjoyed sailing their longboats in the lake while group one tried some freshly prepared soup that they had made.

Play Day!

One of our favourite days of the year happened in Term 6 - play day! We had so much fun soaking the teachers, each other and even some of the dinnerladies.

There was a slip and slide, bouncey castle and the dreaded spaghetti station. It was so much fun to run around and play with all the equipment.

KS2 Sports Day

On Wednesday 4th June, we finally had our sports day. It consisted of running, jumping and throwing. We even had some new events this year including 'toad in the hole.' Everyone worked really hard and gave their best efforts to every event. All the children performed amazingly well and we are proud of them all.

Mental Health Day

For Mental Health Awareness Week, we wore green to school and had the opportunity to share stories with Year 3. We each picked a storybook from our classroom and read with a partner in Year 3. When we were finished, the Year 3s shared some of their favourite stories with us.

Bristol City Assembly

On 5th March, we were lucky enough to have an experience talk from some female Bristol City players! We got to ask them lots of questions about their careers and they inspired us to think about what we might like to do when we're older.

Pirate Day

For our last day of Term 3, we teamed up with the lovely Year 1 children to embark on a code-breaking treasure hunt! We worked in pairs to spot the mysterious pirate symbols and break the sailor's codes. It was so lovely to work some new people and to use our Year 5 knowledge to help others.

After our treasure hunt, we sang a sea shanty with Year 1. It was great fun copying Miss Burfoot's actions!

We spent our mornings creating treasure maps, articles for our ship and even sewing some extra gold coins!

Year 5 and 6 Disco

We had an amazing time celebrating at the Year 5 and 6 disco this year. We had glow sticks, face paint and dance competitions to the music! It was so much fun to dance and party with all our friends.

NSPCC Number Day

On 7th February, we celebrated the NSPCC Number Day. Some of us dressed as Times Table Rock Stars while others had some funky mathematical costumes. In our maths lessons we used our maths skills to solve a range of fun problems.

BR Buccaneers Topic Launch

This started went off with a bang! We came back to school to find our classrooms transformed into the Admiral Benbow Inn. We sat with our crewmates and talked about the amazing adventures that we'd had over the Christmas break! After a well deserved catch up, we watched Treasure Island to prepare ourselves for the exciting term ahead.

Santa Dash!

Dressed in an array of Christmas jumpers and silly outfits, we embarked on a Santa dash. We ran some laps around Fern Hill, racing each other as we went round.

It was so much fun to try and beat the teachers!

Christmas Parties

To celebrate the festive season, we were lucky enough to have a Christmas party. In each class, we had lots of activities to choose from, such as board games, Chritsmas colouring and karaoke. During our afternoon of fun, we were paid a very. special visit from Father Chritmas. He brought us some lovely games for our classroom and we cannot wait to play them together. For a little break part-way through, we enjoyed sitting down with some popcorn to watch a Christmas film before the end of the day,

Christmas Dinner

We thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas dinners this year! We all went in to the hall together to eat, sing Christmas songs and we even watched Matt let balloons off!

Year 5 and 6 Carol Concert 2024

Year 5 and 6 joined together to put on a beautiful Christmas performance for their parents. After weeks of practise, we stood proudly outside of Fern Hill and sang some of our favourite Christmas carols and read lovely poems.

Christmas Wrapping Paper

This week, Year 5 have been super creative and created some beautiful Christmas wrapping paper.

We drew black lines using felt tips and then used small paint brushes to add fairylight details.

Children in Need 2024

To show our support for Children in Need 2024, we competed in a whole-school skipping challenge! Each class had 2 minutes to do as many skips as possible, with the winner from each class earning a prize.

We all came to school wearing something spotty or something showing Pudsey bear. In our CIN attire, we took part in lots of mini challenges throughout the day including: turning the whiteboard spotty, completing Pudsey maths challenges and even paying ten compliments to our friends.

Defenders of Britain Topic Launch

Today, we turned outselves into the Great Heathen army! We designed and created beautiful Viking sheilds, helmets and even some axes. After showing our fantastic Viking creations, we shared some of our topic homework. From posters to videos, giant shields to longships, we created some fantastic pieces of work.

We can't wait to learn more about these vicious Vikings and everything they did during their rule in Britain.

Stripes for Strokes Day

To raise awareness of strokes and to support Bristol After Stroke, we came to school wearing striped clothing and completed a Where's Wally scavenger hunt. In classes, we learnt about what a stroke is and how really important charities, like Bristol After Stroke, can be really helpful for people that have experienced them.

In the afternoon, we went on a crazy treasure hunt. After following lots of tricky clues scattered throughout the playground, we found hundreds of mini Wally cards and finally made our way to find some BIG Wallies. Each of our classes received a certificate for being excellent Where's Wally experts.

CreateBR Days

In Term 1, Year 5 joined together with Year 6 to put on a fantastic performance. We spent two days creating poems, dances and learning new songs ready to perform to the Year 3s and 4s. We sang in a round, created a storm using body percussion and performed a flash mob to Thriller! Each of the sections of this performance represented a different season.

Between rehearsals, we created some beautiful origami. For this project, we created leaves that were in a range of autumnal colours and sizes. During our performance, we threw these in the air to represent leaves falling in Autumn.

To round up our creative days, we also had the chance to try willow weaving. We were shown how dried willow can be used to make beautiful sculptures, like a hare or a person. Year 5 helped the sculpter to weave willow into a fantastic badger sculpture that is going to be a part of our playground! We've played a huge part in a great project that will be a part of Beacon Rise for years to come.

Chirstmas artwork

To start getting into the festive spirit, Year 5 created some beautiful drawings of stained-glass windows covered in Christmas trees. These lovely pieces of artwork were sent home to show our grown ups. We can't wait to see how these look when they've been put onto cards, mugs and coasters!

Space Dome

Year 5 were lucky enough to have a visit from the Space Dome. In our classes, we crawled through a dark tunnel that brought us out into a huge inflatable dome. Inside the dome, the fantastic scientists taughts us all about space, including what each planet looks like and its size.

The space dome experts also taught us that we can travel using the stars to navigate our way around. We learnt that the Northern Star stays still as the Earth rotates on its axis. They proved this to us by spinning the light globe really quickly - we were almost dizzy by the end!

Reach for the Stars Topic Launch!

To start the year off with a bang, we created our own rockets to launch into space! We filled our rockets with water, vinegar and an alka seltzer tablet. The pressure inside our rockets built and eventually sent our rockets flying up into the air!

Little Lifesavers

This term, Year 5 have been lucky enough to have a Little Lifesavers expereince. Along with Year 6, we learnt some fantastic skills that can help to save lives! We learnt how to perform CPR; what to do if someone is choking; and how to put somebody into the recovery position.

All of these brilliant sessions were run by trained volunteers from the local community. These are skills that will stay with us long into our futures.
