We even labelled ourselves!
INTENT: to learn French colour vocabulary.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to recited the French colours, identify them on a series of pictures and then write them down on sticky notes and label the different colours they can find in the classroom.
IMPACT: the children knew a range of French colour names.
INTENT: to learn French animal vocabulary.
IMPLEMENTATION: children learnt the names for various French animals and then to combined this knowledge with the colours they learnt last lesson to make French noun phrases.
IMPACT: the children were able to recall a range of words in French for animals.
INTENT: to learn the words for months and the days of the week in French.
IMPLEMENTATION: children learnt then names in French for months and days and then to played a selection of interactive games to reinforce their learning.
IMPACT: the children were able to pronounce French words for days of the week and months.
INTENT: to recap the vocabulary learnt this term.
IMPLEMENTATION: children identified the names and colours of a variety of French animals and then to name the days of the week and months of the year. The children to put this knowledge to the test with a variety of French vocabulary games.

INTENT: to be able to identify parts of the body in French.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to learnt the French vocabulary for parts of the body and then put their new knowledge into effect drawing faces (and aliens!) at their teacher's direction.
Children then to dance and sing to 'Tete, Epaules, Genoux et Pieds'.
IMPACT: children knew many of the French words for different parts of their bodies.

... and very much faster!
INTENT: to be able to ask and answer simple questions about themselves.
IMPLEMENTATION: children learnt how to ask and answer questions about their name and how they are feeling.
Children then played a game where they picked a name card and introduced themselves to their neighbour in their new character.
IMPACT: children could hold a short simple conversation.
INTENT: to be able to extend their conversational skills to include their age and hobbies.
IMPLEMENTATION: children learnt how to tell someone their age and to say what they enjoy doing in their spare time.
Children then combined their learning from the last two lessons to complete a comic strip with several individual conversations.
IMPACT: children were able to hold short conversations and knew how to write these down.
INTENT: to learn how the French celebrate Christmas.
IMPLEMENTATION: children learnt about French Christmas customs and then created Christmas cards with French greetings.
IMPACT: the children understood some French Christmas traditions.
First we played a memory game using colour vocabulary learnt in an earlier lesson.

INTENT: to learn French vocabulary for items in their pencil case.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to learn the French names for a range of items in their pencil case. Children then to practise this vocabulary with a game of 'Dans ma trousse il-y-a ...'
IMPACT: the children will be able to name items in their pencil case.
INTENT: to discuss their favourite lessons, in French.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to first be introduced to French vocabulary relating to their classroom and lessons and then to utilise this to say which lessons they like best and why.
IMPACT: children will be able to hold a short conversation in French about school.
INTENT: to learn vocabulary linked to school resources.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to revisit classroom vocabulary and to extend it to asking and answering questions about resources. 'C'est un stylo?' 'Non, c'est une gomme!' Children then to label aspects of their classroom using sticky notes.
IMPACT: children will remember vocabulary relating to their classroom and resources.
INTENT: to learn basic French classroom instructions.
IMPLEMENTATION: the children to learn instructions in French for various actions they might expect to be asked to do in class: stand up, sit down, open and close the door, open and close their books, put their hand up, listen, repeat and stop talking. The children then to play a game of 'La professeur dit ...' following instructions only when 'la professeur' tells them to.
IMPACT: the children will understand French classroom instructions.
We are all listening VERY carefully!
INTENT: to identify words and phrases within French lyrics.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to listen to the song 'Sur le Pont d'Avignon' and to highlight specific words and phrases within the lyrics. Children then to learn to sing the song.
IMPACT: the children will have recognised key words and phrases in the song.
We enjoyed singing and dancing along to Alain le Lait's 'J'aime les fruits'.

INTENT: to learn French vocabulary for fruit.
IMPLEMENTATION: the children to learn the French names for a range of fruits that they might come across if they were to visit France. The children then to learn a song celebrating a love of fruit!
IMPACT: the children will know the French words for a generous selection of fruit.
We discovered that, whilst the French generally found the British 'génial' (which loosely translates as 'awesome'), they were less impressed by our food. Some members of Y5 were outraged at the criticism of our habit of drinking tea with milk!
INTENT: to consider themselves from the point of view of someone from another country.
IMPLEMENTATION: children to watch vox pops videos of French people describing aspects of British food, culture and Britons themselves. Are the children surprised by the French opinions? Do they agree with them?
IMPACT: the chidlren will have looked at themselves through different eyes.
Due to the bank holidays, Year 5 only have three French lessons this term, so we decided to focus on ourselves!

INTENT: to compose a short presentation about myself in French - Part 1
IMPLEMENTATION: the children to recap various strains of French vocabulary to start putting together a short presentation about themselves in French.
IMPACT: the children will be able to describe themselves in French.
INTENT: to compose a short presentation about myself in French - Part 2
IMPLEMENTATION: the children to further explore the vocabulary they have learnt so far this year and to be able to add details about their families and their likes and dislikes to their presentations.
IMPACT: the children will be able to describe themselves in French in more detail.
INTENT: to compose a short presentation about myself in French - Part 3
IMPLEMENTATION: The children to complete, memorise and present the piece they have composed about themselves in French.
IMPACT: the children will be able to present a short piece about themselves in French.
INTENT: to name and describe different types of homes.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children practised their pronunciation of house types in French. They worked in pairs to match each picture with the description and then practised saying the key phrases together.
IMPACT: Children can pronounce different types of houses in French.
INTENT: to discuss who might live inside a home.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children learnt the names for different types of family members. They then practised building sentences that related to their families.
IMPACT: Children can say who they live with in French.
