Impact of Technology
INTENT: to understand what a system is.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children worked in small groups and pairs to discuss what computer systems are. They compared digital systems to those in everyday life, such as a bicycle, to understand how the parts work together to create a final system.
IMPACT: Children are able to describe a digital system, referring to input, process and output.
INTENT: to use a search engine effectively.
IMPLEMENTATION: Year 5 worked in small groups to explore search engines, discussing how they use inputs, processes and outputs. They looked at how a human plays a key role in a system and how this links to using a search engine system.
IMPACT: Children understand how search engines are systems and how humans play a role in the input.
INTENT: to explain how to refine results.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were given a key word to search for on their search engines. They then made some notes of key information that the search engine provided them. The teacher then revealed the specific information that the children had needed to find. As a class, children discussed why being very specific with your search term is important for finding out key information.
IMPACT: Children understand that search results can be refined by using specific search terms.
INTENT: to describe how search resullts can be influenced.
IMPLEMENTATION: The children were asked to reflect on their understanding of how search results are refined and ranked. They then discussed how search results are influenced by adverts and sponsorships.
IMPACT: Children can explain how search engines are influenced by adverts and sponsorships.
INTENT: to discuss and explore different filim techniques.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children used iPads to explore different camera angles. They compared how holding the camera from a high, medium or low angle can change the size of the subject in the video. Children also learnt that they can shoot their subject from a close-up shot, a mid shot or a long shot and discussed when these might be useful in their videos.
IMPACT: Children are aware of different camera techniuqes and when they are best to be used for filming.
INTENT: to use a storyboard structure to plan a video.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children used a storyboard template to plan which filiming techniques and camera angles would be most appropriate in each section of their films. The children worked in groups to apply their understanding of camera angles to a storyboard to decide which techniques would work best for their Viking videos.
IMPACT: Children are able to identify when each filiming technique is most appropriate within their videos.
INTENT: to rehearse filming and recording a video about the Vikings.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children worked in groups to rehearse their Viking videos. They used their storyboards from last week to decide which filming techniques to use to make their video as good as it can be.
IMPACT: Children are able to discuss and adapt using different camera angles and techniques.
INTENT: to film a video using a range of techniques.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children worked in groups to put their plans to the test. The children switched between presenting and fiilming, ensuring they worked as a group to use a range of filming techniques and camera angles.
IMPACT: Children can use their knowledge of camera techniques to film and video about the Vikings.
INTENT: For children to create a paper-based database.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children worked in small groups to create a paper-based database of animals. They then sorted their record cards alphabetically and began to use the database to answer some questions.
IMPACT: Children understand that a database is a collection of information that can be used to retrieve data.
INTENT: For children to group and sort information in a database.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children explored two database examples (one about minibeasts and one about countries). The teacher then showed children how to use fields and sort by lists to group and sort information.
IMPACT: Children are able to organise a database to find specific information quickly.
INTENT: For children to compare data visually using charts and graphs.
IMPLEMENTATION: In pairs, children discussed different types of graphs and charts. After matching pictures with their definitions, they then tried to create graphs using the data in a database. They explore different types of graphs and weighed up which graphs worked best for answering different questions.
IMPACT: Children can understand that data can be presented visually.
INTENT: For children to explore micro:bits and programme the LED function.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children were able to explore the micro:bit website. They started by following a tutorial to create a name badge before experimenting with additional code.
IMPACT: Children can understand that a micro:bit can be coded to perform set actions.
INTENT: For children to understand that inputs influence outputs.
IMPLEMENTATION: Building on their skills from last week, the children explored a range of inputs that the micro:bits used. They created feelings badges that used button inputs to show LED outputs.
IMPACT: Children understand and can explain that inputs influence outputs.
INTENT: For children to explain how movement can be used as an input.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children explore using the micro:bit tilt and shake features and created a program that used these as conditions. Children were ale to create rock, paper, scissors games and dice using movement conditions.
IMPACT: Children can discuss how movement can be used as a input for a condition.
INTENT: For children to programme a micro:bit, using IF, ELSE, AND, OR and NOT statements.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children combined their skills from previous weeks to create micro:bit programs that had if, else and or statements in their conditions.
IMPACT: Children can explain how if, else and or can be used to alter outcomes of a condition.
INTENT: For children to identify drawing tools.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children explore the Google Drawings application. They worked in pairs to trial each of the drawing tools and to gain an understanding of their purposes.
IMPACT: Children understand how different drawing tools can be used effectively.
INTENT: For children to combine shapes to create an image.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children worked in pairs to use the shape tool. They conbined a number of shapes, changing their colours and borders, to create new images.
IMPACT: Children understand how shapes can be used together to create a new image.
INTENT: For children to use their understanding of drawing tools to design a vector drawing of their own.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children built on their skills from the previous weeks to design and create their own vector drawings. Some children focussed on recreating the BR logo while others thought of new designs that could be used to represent our school. Children used shapes, layering and resizing to create their final pieces.
IMPACT: Children understand how to combine drawing tools to create a final image.
INTENT: To understand how Scratch uses conditions for a programme.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children worked in pairs to explore condition blocks on Scratch. They copied some set programmes and then used trial and error to test and debug any changes they could make.
IMPACT: Children are able to test and debug the Scratch software.
INTENT: To use condition blocks to change outcomes from answers.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children used set condition blocks to assess outcomes within a quiz. They described how each answer had a varied outcome and how the condition block influenced this.
IMPACT: Children understand that conditions inflence outcomes.
INTENT: To design a playable quiz using if and else statements.
IMPLEMENTATION: Children used their knowledge of condition blocks and outcomes to design and test a quiz. They conditioned the programme to have set outcomes with predecided answers. Children then tested these in pairs.
IMPACT: Children can create a playable game using if and else conditions to influence outcomes.
