Design Thinking

what is design thinking?

The design thinking process is a process that helps you to think deeper and come up with ways to solve a problem. Look and the 2 pictures to get a deeper understanding of each stage.

Stage 1: Empathize

After learning more about my interest and sharing my knowledge through a teaching experience, it was time for me to try digging deeper into my project. Therefore, I created a Padlet so I could understand what are the problems people are having with makeup. Through the Padlet, I found out people feel makeup has too many chemicals, want to simplify the steps and are also concerned about animals being harmed in testing for makeup by the companies.

Stage 2: Define

Although not many people have left responses on my padlet, I learned that the main problem surrounding makeup for many people, is that it contains too many chemicals. The chemicals inside makeup can cause serious cancer and other illnesses. After all, we need to solve this horrible issue if all women still want to cont inue using makeup.

Stage 3: ideate

During The ideate stage, I was looking for solutions to my problem. Although I created a master-list of solutions, my three best were...

  • Homemade makeup using natural ingredients

  • Making a mask which is clear and it doesn't cover you eyes nose and mouth. Directly put on makeup, the mask will prevent makeup from harming your skin

  • colour cornstarch with non-toxic and washable markers.

Out of those ideas, at the end I chose to make homemade makeup because I have all the ingredients and supplies and I think everyone does too.

4. Prototype

Here is the process of making your homemade face powder out of of natural ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • Cinnamon

  • Cornstarch

Supplies:

  • small bowl

  • teaspoon

  1. Put one teaspoon of cornstarch in your bowl and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Make sure you do a patch test before you add cinnamon. It can cause skin irritation.

2. Mix the 2 ingredients up

Tip: For your face powder to match your skin, add more cinnamon if your skin tone is dark and add less if your skin tone is light

3. Last of all, try it out!!!

2. test

To test out my homemade makeup, I brought it out along with a real face powder. I ask some teachers in my school for the difference when they apply both on to their skin.

Mrs Cook

At school I ask Mrs Cook, the principal of Beacon Hill School, to test out my homemade face powder and the real face powder. She said,"I really liked the smell and texture! It was really powdery and silky, unlike the real makeup. The colours are really similar as the homemade one was lighter. I would use the homemade one! But it also depends on the price.

Teresa

Teresa, a class mate said, "The texture is really smooth. Also, it doesn't make my skin to lightly unlike the real make. I prefer the homemade makeup."

Mrs Chand

Mrs Chand, a Year 6 EA, volenteered. She had a concern which was " Is it going to wash away by sweat. I would say it won't if you put them in the correct place.
