Memories of BEHS:
Quality intellect of select teachers including: Stadsvold, Erickson, Leach, Garcia, Blake, Whiton, A.E. Whan, Macy, Holliday, Sr. Day, Strinden
Inspiration from coaches within and outside the sport in which I participated: Rickert, McTaggart, Erickson, Peterson, Leach, Clem, A.E. Whan
Role models and influences along the way: Bill Giller, Rocky Hodgin, Dennis Brown, Arnie Robinette, Dallas Kloke, Gary Knutzen, Jeff Skodje, Steve Sakuma, Dick Henrie, Mike Rickert, Paul Johnson
The Athletes before me who trained, competed and excelled with emotion & drive and silently/actively influenced me along the way —Rod Dahl, Marty Lopez, Bob Bourns, Corky Blum, Dave Berentsen, Dave Komar, Wes Thomas, Dave Mitchell, Jim Rabenstein, Kelly Drake, Dave Erickson, Maria Espinoza, Tim Omdal, Kurt Drake, Alan Bridgeman, Breckenridges
With me at the time who helped make it happen: Ray Burt, Javier Rangel, Sue Benson, Mike Powell, Randy Kaufman
Post Graduation Memories of BEHS that inspire me: Class of 2010’s 3 x State Cross Country Team Titles under influence of Sue and Kevin. Class of 2010’s 4 x 400 Relay team who broke a long standing school record and won a state championship. Connor Whan’s State Track Double whose 1600 effort is deemed by FloTrack as one of the most “gutsy ways to run a 1600 ever.”
In summary, my achievements were the ‘sum total’ influences of all those mentioned and many others who were not mentioned. Those who came before me (and influenced by the coaches and faculty at BEHS) were the impetus of my success at BEHS and beyond. Fundamentally, the “no excuse” performance standard that was imparted upon me from A.E. Whan and Coach Erickson extinguished all urges of marginal performance and attitude of “quit”; hence, a standing record for over 30 years (similar to the 400,800 and 1600 BEHS records ). In addition, the flexibility of the BEHS faculty and administration to allow me to have un supervised access to facilities (weight room, track, gym), flexibility in curriculum structure and off campus latitude allowed me to achieve the results which has resulted in my achievements that has earned me the coveted honor of BEHS Hall of Fame—all without academic compromise. Special recognition is to Mr. Erickson whose knowledge of the sport, effective training, motivation and strategic planning allowed me to be the victor in many highly contested battles in what coaches still claim as the most competitive era in NWL distance running ever. His echoing voice from the heights of the bleachers inspired me to achieve results beyond my physical abilities. I think Mr. Erickson’s name will be a frequent mention in the next era of Hall of Fame inductees “memories” as his passion and commitment to the sport of Track and Field was unprecedented and still influences athletes such as myself in their daily personal pursuits and achievements. To be part of the list of athletes that has been named before me is a proud privilege and I hope I can be an inspiration to future BEHS athletes just as the athletes/coaches before my tenure were to me. Thank you to Mr. Gudgel for his passion for facilitating the BEHS Hall of Fame venue of recognizing past athletes while influencing current and future BEHS students as hopeful inductees into this honored fraternity of BEHS history.

Memories of B-EHS: I’m a 4th generation graduate of BEHS and am very proud of this tradition. Several of my family members have been inducted into the B-E Hall of Fame. I have great memories of high school and the amazing friends that I made are still in my circle today. As I reflect on my sports career at BEHS, I’m proud of my accomplishments, but would give anything to “re-do” some of those seasons. I wish I would have taken practice and training more seriously and not been distracted by “social entertainment” as much as I did. I wish I would have listened more intently to my coaches, Terry Williams, Christie Peterson, Pepe Garcia, Glenn Rickert, and Karen Fure, and also my teachers. I come from an athletic family and our life has revolved around sports. My husband and 4 kids earned varsity accolades at MVHS in a variety of sports as well as when they attended college. The one person who has not received any acknowledgement for their athletic talent is my mom. She and my dad attended BEHS from 1960-64 and there were no competitive sports for girls at that time. They had the Girls Athletic Association which was an after school program for basketball and softball. My mom played in a recreational bowling league and softball league after high school and was a star left fielder who often hit home runs in every game. She was a stud and I wanted to make sure I gave her a shoutout because she didn’t get any accolades back in the ‘60’s.
